Alfred L. Dugan, 84, of State College and Centre Hall, died Thursday, December 6, 2007, at Centre Crest in Bellefonte.
He was born January 5, 1923, in Williamsport, PA as on of the late Bruce Monroe and Mildred H. King Dugan.
On January 25, 1943, in Hagerstown, MD, he married Marietta H. Hoover who survives at the Wynwood House in Centre Hall.
Following his graduation from high school, he attended Lycoming College for two years. He also took numerous service related courses during his military career. Later in life he also completed computer programming courses becoming a certified computer programmer.
During World War II, Mr. Dugan served with company D, 405th Infantry Regiment, the 102nd Division from March 24, 1943 to January 9, 1946. His service included Rhineland Germany and other Central European stations. He earned a Good Conduct Medal, the American Theater Service Medal, and the European African Middle Eastern Theater Service Medal with two Bronze stars, and World War II Victory Medal. Following his active duty in World War II, he enlisted in the U. S. Army Reserves and served for thirty seven years, retiring on January 5, 1983, after having served during the Korean Conflict, the Berlin Crisis and the Viet Nam War.
In addition to his military service, Mr. Dugan worked various jobs through the years, and later worked for the Clearfield County Board of Assistance. From 1957 - 1960 he worked at Curtis-Wright Company as a computer programmer. He also worked for the former HRB Singer, and HR Imbt. He retired in 1989 as computer programmer for G. M. McCrossin Company. He was active in little and teener league baseball in State College and served as head of little league umpire scheduling for one year. He also coached the Jodon Stables Softball Team.
Alfred was a member of the VFW and the American Legion in State College.
Mr. Dugan was an avid deer hunter and Penn State Football fan. He enjoyed woodworking, especially making lawn ornaments.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by three daughters, Rebecca Lee Dugan Elensky and her husband Francis of Curwensville, Kay Eileen Dugan Hauser and her husband Ray of Snow Shoe, and Cynthia Ann Dugan Barker and her husband Merrill of Arronsburg; two sons, Michael David Dugan and his wife Kim if Evans City, PA and Robert Allen Dugan and his wife Amy of Port Matilda, PA; seven grandchildren, Lisa Clark, Eric Elensky, Tara Mullaney, Glenn and Lynn Barker and Matthew and Hunter Dugan; seven great grandchildren; and one sister, Helen Shadduck of Florida.
Alfred was preceded in death by his parents, an infant brother John, and a brother Harry Dugan.
Friends will be received from noon to 2:00 p. m. Sunday, December 9, 2007 at Mark D. Heintzelman Funeral and Cremation Service, 1034 Benner Pike, State College, PA. The funeral will follow at 2:00 p. m. at the funeral home, with the Rev. K. R. Mele officiating. Burial will be at Centre County Memorial Park, State College.
