Alice (Chip) Avey, 75, of Boalsburg, died Sunday, July 18, 2004 at Mt. Nittany Medical Center in State College.
She was born on June 26, 1929, in Cresson, PA, a daughter of the late Robert C. and Alice M. Aikey Brown.
On July 4, 1952 she married Robert J. Avey who preceded her in death on May 30, 2001.
She was a graduate of Barnesboro High School and Dickinson College with a degree in English Education and literature.
She worked as a substitute teacher in several school districts in the area. She taught English, Literature, and Drama in the Bellefonte School District prior to her retirement. In addition to her teaching duties, she directed many plays for the school district.
Alice was a former member of the Pleasant Gap United Methodist Church. She was an avid supporter of the State College Nittany Knights Barbershop Chorus, of which her late husband was a charter member, and often served as makeup artist for their shows. She enjoyed theatre and acted in several plays at the Boal Barn and with the State College Community Theatre. She was a Penn State Sports fanatic., a voracious reader, and enjoyed doing crossword puzzles.
Mrs. Avey is survived by three daughters, Alice Lynn Avey of Boalsburg, Bonnie Twymon of Fayetteville NC and Jill Oakley of Greensboro, NC; two sons Larry and Richard Avey both of Denver Colorado; one brother Larry Brown of Leanordtown, MD; and six grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by three sons James, Allen, and Glenn Robert Avey; and a brother, Robert Brown.
Friends will be received from 7 - 8 p. m. Wednesday, July 21, 2004, at Mark D. Heintzelman Funeral Service, 226 S. Pennsylvania Ave. Centre Hall, PA. A memorial service will be held at 8:00 p. m. at the funeral home. Burial will be private at the convenience of the family.
