Andrew Hottenstein, a resident of Patton Township, had two births. His first birth was on December 17, 1967, and was followed by normal development. He had to start all over again some fifteen months later following a massive seizure that left him partially paralyzed and mentally challenged. Through the grace of God, his parents, doctors, social workers, teachers, and other dedicated individuals, he overcame many behavioral problems, like hyperactivity, and started to gain control over his life.
Growing up, he had strong interests in art, music, and literary works. His interest in art was expressed through working with wood. He expressed music through collecting CDs as well as through singing. His favorite entertainer was Billy Joel and he memorized all of his songs. While Andrew couldn't read at his age level, he loved books and was a frequent visitor to the library.
Prior to living on his own, Andrew lived in Strawberry Fields' group homes and apartments run by Skills, Inc. He had many roommates in addition to an older brother and sister. He lost his mother when he was 17. She would have been proud to see him graduate from State College Area High School in 1987. Andrew's dad was so proud that he had a graduation party and invited all the special education teachers Andrew ever had. Most came. Andrew's dad has been his helper, guide, and friend. He has been with him every step of the way.
Through high school and after graduation Andrew worked in a variety of jobs, such as a landscaper, janitor, and dishwasher. Until his passing, he was a dishwasher at Quaker Steak & Lube. He used a bicycle for transportation to and from work and for recreation. When not working, Andrew loved to work on his art, listen to music, watch television, visit with friends, and take care of his two cats. Some of his favorite things to do were cooking, trying out new recipes, eating out, especially breakfast, and shopping at Wal-Mart.
Andrew was preceded in death by his mother, Ruth Schaeffer Hottenstein and is survived by his father, Michael P. Hottenstein, and stepmother, Star Campbell, of State College. He is also survived by a sister, Heidi Shaffer of Kent, Ohio and a brother, Marc Hottenstein of Casselberry, Florida.
