Arnold Grudin, 89, of State College, died March 11,2005 at Foxdale Village, the Anthony House. Born February 7,1916 in New York City, Arnold, a professor emeritus in mathematics from Denison University in Granville, Ohio, and his wife, Betty, chose State College for their retirement years, and moved into Foxdale Village when it was still under construction. He is survived by his wife Betty,; two son's,; Jonathan and his wife Gayna Williams, and their two children, Eleanor and Isobel,; Thaddeus and his wife Nachiko Yama Moto, and their two children, Teva and Holly,; and one sister, Vivian Pemble and her husband Penny.
In his five years of service in the Army, which commenced when he volunteered in 1939, Arnold served in the Army Signal Corps and later was transferred in rank to the U.S. Army Weather Service. He was prepared to go to Karachi, India when he transferred to the Air Corps. When war was declared, he was on a troop transport destined to leave New Orleans and go to the Philippines. Since the Japanese had just blockaded the Philippines, they stayed in Panama six months and then he was sent to Trinidad. He spent three years at the Fort Read, Waller Field Airbase where he was a cryptographic operator with the Air Force. He was discharged at Fort Monmouth in October of 1945.
As a returning GI, he attended Long Island University for one year in meteorology. He graduated from New York University in mathematics and physics, in an accelerated course. He received a MA in topology at Columbia University in 1948, the year that he and Betty were married. They spent four years in Boulder where both son's were born, while he worked on his Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Colorado. During his 34 years of teaching math at Denison, he received a National Science Foundation grant for a year of postdoctoral study at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. During one sabbatical, he taught undergraduates at Reed College in Portland, Oregon. After Mandatory retirement from Denison, he, at age 71, whose great interest in life was mathematics, taught for two years at Pikeville College in Kentucky.
A memorial service will be held at a later date in the spring.
