Betty J. Walker cast off her earthly burdens during the evening of April 27, 2003, at the Valley View Nursing Home in Belleville, PA. She was born March 3, 1929 in Inskip, Tennessee to D. K. and Maureen McCloud Brackett. She graduated from Knoxville High School in Knoxville, Tennessee in 1947. The cause of her death was complications from Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP)

Betty married the late Jack E. Hammer in Knoxville after graduation from high school, but that marriage ended in divorce in 1951. She then met and married Wayne J. Walker on September 4, 1953. Betty committed herself full time to the occupations of wife, mother, den mother, Girl Scout leader and volunteer work for various charities. She also found time to enjoy dancing, golf, gardening, bridge and frequent trips to Capon Springs, West Virginia.

As a result of various assignments received by Wayne from the Aluminum Company of America, Betty and the rest of the Walker family lived in Maryville and Alcoa, Tennessee (1953-1964); Massena, New York (1964 - 1968; and Lower Burrell, Pennsylvania (1968 - 2001). After several years of retirement and Betty's diagnosis of PSP, Betty and Wayne moved into the Valley View Retirement Community in Belleville, PA.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents, and by her beloved stepfather, Dr. Herman H. Jenkins. She is survived by her husband Wayne, and by her three children: Richard J. Walker of Pheonix Arizona; Rebecca J. Evans of Spring Mills, PA and Susan VanKirk of Hampton, VA. She is also survived by eight grandchildren: Katherine F. walker, John Michael Walker, Matthew J. Evans, Rachel J. Evans, Deborah, C. Bullard, David C. VanKirk, Amanda S. VanKirk, and Jessica L. VanKirk. Last May Betty was delighted that God granted her the chance to meet, to get acquainted with, and to hold her only great grandchild, Jonathan Vaughn Bullard during what was to be her last visit to Capon Springs. Betty's sister Jo Ann Allen of Charlotte, Michigan, survives as well.
A memorial service for Betty will be held at 11:00 a. m. on Friday, MAy 2, 2003 at the Grace United church of Christ in Spring Mills, PA. The family will receive friends at the church beginning at 10:00 a. m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions in Betty's name to the Society for Progressive Nuclear Palsy, Woodholmes Medical Building, Suite 515, 185 Greentree Road, Baltimore, MD 21208.
