Carl Roger Amick, 93, of State College and Boalsburg, PA, died peacefully on September 29, 2025. He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Claire Elizabeth Amick of Yelm, WA; his son, Aaron Amick, also of Yelm; his daughter from his first marriage to Irene Hamel Amick, Micki Amick of Denver, CO; and his three grandchildren, Madeleine Krebsbach, Jack Amick, and Andy Amick. His daughter and grandson, Molly Amick and Atticus Amick-Stites, preceded him in death.
Born May 21, 1932, in Clarksburg, WV, he was named for his father Carl Amick and maternal grandfather Roger Van Buskirk, and was known most of his life as Roger, and occasionally later in life as Carl. Roger moved as a teenager to the Lehigh Valley area of Pennsylvania, and graduated from Nazareth Area High School, where he was president of his class. He attended Moravian College, working full time in a local gas station as well as serving as president of his class junior year, and in 1955, was the first in his family to receive a college degree. After attending the University of Maryland for graduate work, he joined the Navy as an officer in 1956, and was stationed in Brooklyn, NY. From there, he had a proud career in Naval and then Defense Intelligence, heading the State College office from 1969 until his retirement in 1987.
A man of varied interests and talents, Roger enjoyed building, tinkering, woodworking, and ran an antiques finishing business for a number of years. He was a lifelong outdoorsman, camping, hiking, hunting, and fishing. He helped run the Pennsylvania Rifle & Pistol Association and supported his son Aaron at shooting matches around the state. He and Claire enjoyed raising Dalmatians, thrifting, and many years wintering in Palmetto, FL, relaxing at the beach. Roger preferred his own analyses, read widely about history and philosophy, and was a keen observer of current events, enjoyed writing including often irreverent letters to the editor. A man who all his life had friends of varying ages, he is probably best remembered by those who knew him as an endless storyteller, a talent that, despite hearing loss and dementia, he fiercely maintained to the end.
For those who wish to gather and share stories and pictures in Roger's memory, there will be a celebration of life March 15, 1-6pm at the American Legion Hall in State College, PA. For more details, please reach out to Aaron Amick at aaron.amick@protonmail.com.
