Selders
August 15, 1941 – December 11, 2025
Carolyn Anna Selders, 84, of State College, passed away on December 11, 2025, at home surrounded by her loving family.
Born August 15, 1941, in Washington County, MD, she was the daughter of the late Elmer Eugene Wertman and Dorothy Pearl Spriggs Wertman Johnson. On August 22, 1959, she married the late Gerald Frederick Selders.
She is survived by her sons, Mark T. Selders and wife, Christine, of Port Matilda and Kevin R. Selders and wife, Melissa, of Lock Haven; five grandchildren, Jarilyn Walz and fiancé, Alexander Newberry, Alexis DeShong and husband, Kyle, Rachel Schilling and husband, Chad, Jonathan Johnson Jr. and wife, Eliana, and Brayden Selders. She is also survived by a sister-in-law, Huberta Shade and husband, Wayne, of Berkeley Springs, WV and sister-in-law, Carol Selders of Martinsburg, WV. She was preceded in death by infant daughter, Cynthia Selders.
Carolyn was a 1959 graduate of Berkeley Springs High School. Prior to her retirement in 2003, she worked for 31 years in the Media Department at the State College Area High School.
Carolyn was a member of the Pleasant Gap United Methodist Church, OES State College Chapter #388, had belonged to the Optimist Club of State College, had served as Derby Director for the Central PA Soapbox Derby and had volunteered with the Central and Western Hugh O'Brian Youth Seminars. Along with her husband, they had served as Youth Directors at the Woodycrest UM Church.
Carolyn was a 62-year member of the General Federation of Woman's Club (GFWC) As a GFWC member she started her club membership in the Martinsburg, WV Junior Club. After moving to State College, she transferred her membership to the State College Junior Woman's Club and currently was a member of the GFWC State College. She served in many capacities on the Centre County level, including president, served in many offices for the North Central District, including District Director, served as Middle Atlantic Region (DE, NJ, NY, PA) President, 2008-2010, and served in many offices of GFWC Pennsylvania including President, 2010-2012.
Carolyn enjoyed attending the Centre County Grange Fair and trips with family and friends. She was a fan of Penn State sports and regularly attended games and events. She loved making memories with her children and grandchildren.
Evening visitation will be Thursday, December 18, 6-8pm at Haky Georgiana Centre County Funeral Home, 1034 Benner Pike, State College. A memorial service will be held Friday, December 19, 11:00 am at the funeral home with visitation prior to the service from 10-11am.
Memorial contributions in remembrance of Carolyn may be made to the Pleasant Gap United Methodist Church Food Bank.
