Obituary

Carroll L. Howes, of State College was surrounded by family as angels took him to heaven on Tuesday, February 7th, 2017, at Wynwood House in Boalsburg. He was born near Gaithersburg, MD on December 24th, 1923. He was the son of the late Lenox and Margaret (Watkins) Howes. His brother, James Howes and sister Mary Isabel Thompson are deceased. Carroll married Patricia Reese on January 25th, 1953, she preceded him in death on August 8, 2016. He attended high school in Langhorn-Middleton, PA and Penn State University and then received a master's degree from the University of Wisconsin in 1962. At Penn State he was a member of Delta Theta Sigma fraternity and an honorary member of Alpha Zeta. He was also a member of the campus 4H club, the FFA chapter and the agriculture student council. He was blessed with four children; Jeff Howes (Carol) of Shavertown, PA, Chris Howes (Kathy) of Houston, TX, Janice Krug (Bill) of State College, PA, and Donna Stringfellow (Steven) of Overland Park, KS; and grandchildren; Lindsey Nipitella (Nick), Cody and Amanda Krug and Heather Beaver (Garrett), Sarah, Claire and Emily Howes, Kelsey, Sydney and Madison Stringfellow, Gage Dennis, and one great grandson, Nicholas Nipitella. He also served in the army as a Sergeant from 1945 to 1947. He is a member of the State College Presbyterian Church, State College Kiwanis Club, PSU Alumni Association, and was a 4H leader for over 25 years. He loved his job as a Cooperative Extension Agent at Penn State for 37 years and was an avid sports fan-- PSU football and basketball. He had season tickets to football for over 50 years. He also enjoyed gardening, fishing and deer hunting. Friends and family will be received from 6 to 8pm on Friday, February 10th at the Heintzelman Funeral Home, 1034 Benner Pike, State College, PA, and Saturday, February 11th, from 10:30 am until time of service at 11:00 am in the funeral home with Pastor Jody Reese officiating. Interment will follow at the Centre County Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to National 4H Awards Fund c/o Penn State College of Agriculture Sciences, 240 Ag Administration Building, University Park, PA 16802, checks are payable to Penn State and the memo can read Carroll Howes 4H Fund. .
