Daniel C. Frysinger, 95, of State College, passed away at Mount Nittany Medical Center on Sunday, August 28th. Born on August 31, 1915, he was the son of Howard L. Frysinger and Alice Chappell Frysinger of Philadelphia.
Dan was a 1933 graduate of Westtown School and a 1937 graduate of Haverford College. He married Katherine Taylor Frysinger in 1942. They were going to wait to be married until Dan finished his drafted time as a conscientious objector, but when Pearl Harbor occurred, their letters crossed in the mail saying "Let's get married now." Their marriage lasted until Kay's death in 1991.
A Quaker from young adulthood on, Dan conducted business with a focus on honesty, forthrightness, and concern for others. He worked for several years for CARE, Inc. in Philadelphia and then completed his work career at J. E. Rhoads and Sons in Wilmington, DE. He began as Plant Manager and later became President of the company. He was the first President who was not a member of the Rhoads family. In retirement, he spent several years working as Business Manager for Pendle Hill, a Quaker study center in Wallingford, PA. In 1989, Dan and Kay moved from their long-time home in Westtown, PA, to Foxdale Village in State College, where Dan came to love and appreciate the staff who were always there for him.
Known for his practical competence, Dan liked to assist other Foxdale residents with tasks such as buying cars or fixing things. He also was known for taking a car full of women to Red Lobster for lunch in Altoona. (He liked to say there was safety in numbers.) He also enjoyed playing golf and bowlingwith his male buddies until just a few years ago. He was a member of State College Friends Meeting.
Dan is survived by four children: Bill Frysinger of Northport, ME (Holly Dill), Bob Frysinger of Charlottesville, VA (Pearl Yu), Margy Frysinger of Warriors Mark, PA (Stephen Tuttle), and Howard Frysinger of Glenmoore, PA (Alison Frysinger). He is also survived by nine grandchildren: Brian Frysinger of Lincolnton, NC, Daniel Frysinger of Topanga, CA, Charlotte Frysinger of Cochranville, PA, Kate Frysinger of Newtown Square, PA, Eric Frysinger of Glenmoore, PA, Dylan Tuttle of State College, PA, Robin Tuttle of State College, PA, Jacob Frysinger of Charlottesville, VA, and Elizabeth Frysinger of Charlottesville, VA. He was very excited to welcome the birth of his first great-grandchild, Ethan Daniel Vivar, just days before his death.
A student who interviewed Dan during the past year quoted him as saying, "I've had a good life. I was able to put food on the table and marry the woman I loved. What else could I have asked for?"
