H. David Sarge, 87, of State College, died on Jan. 23, 2006. Born Dec. 20, 1918, in Pittsburgh, David was the son of the late H. David and Stella Albright Sarge. In 1945, he married Martha Bloomquist, who survives at home. David graduated from Lebanon Valley High School and went on to become a chemical engineer, earning his degree at the Pennsylvania State University, class of 1941. Upon graduation from the R.O.T.C., David was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army. He served in the Army's Chemical Warfare Division from 1941 until 1945. He was honorably discharged with the rank of Major. David joined the Rohm and Haas Company of Philadelphia in 1945, and worked in various areas of the company as a chemical engineer and later at the corporate headquarters, until his retirement in 1988. David was invited to the White House in 1979 by President Carter for the work he did as Regional Coordinator for the National Minority Purchasing Council. David was a master cabinetmaker, specializing in the reproduction of fine period furniture and clocks. He enjoyed completing crossword puzzles, building model ships, and participating in skeet and trap shooting. He was also a member of the State College Presbyterian Church. In addition to his wife Martha, he is survived by his three sons and their families: William Craig Sarge and his wife, Theresa, of Port Royal, and their children, Andrew, Jeremy, Melinda, and William; H. David Sarge III and his wife, Gwendolyn, of State College, and their children, Sarah and Laura; John Phillip Sarge and his wife, Charlene, of Warminster, and their children, John and David. In addition to his parents, David was preceded in death by his brother, Robert Sarge. There will be no public visitation and a private service will be held at the convenience of the family.
