Obituary

Don L. Springer (Age 81) --- of State College, PA passed away July 5 at Mt. Nittany Medical Center. He was born November 2, 1934 in Uniontown, PA to the late Edward and Edna (Taylor) Springer.

Don graduated from Uniontown High School in 1954 and enlisted in the U.S. Army and attained the rank of sergeant. He was stationed at Ft. Devens, MA where he taught classes for the Army Security Agency and earned the Distinguished Service Award from the Department of Defense.

He married his high school sweetheart Eileen (Hurley) in February 1956 who survives him along with their five children: Jeff (Jill), Patrick (Sue), and Shawn all of State College, Susan Schrock of Raleigh, NC, and Chris (Deb) of Duncansville, PA; seven grandchildren Khaki Ruggerio (Ryan), Beth Dabney, Taylor, Stephen (Brooke), Kaleb, Dana, and Anna Springer; great grandchildren Catie and Will Ruggerio; sister Claire Oberleitner (Bill) of Woodstock, GA; sister-in-law Patricia Mitchell of Vanderbilt, PA; and aunt Faye Springer of Uniontown, PA.

Following discharge in 1957, he obtained an Associate's Degree from Robert Morris Business School and began his career at Gallatin Bank as a loan officer. In 1969, he opened his own real estate business and was a partner in Baker and Springer Builders. In 1983, he moved to State College and joined Benchmark Reality. He later returned to banking eventually retiring from Mellon Bank. During the majority of his career Don taught courses at Penn State's Fayette and University Park campuses. Following his retirement, he worked at the Penn State golf course for 10 years.

Don was actively involved for over 26 years as a volunteer firefighter with the Uniontown and South Union Twp fire departments, and was a member of the fire police with the Alpha Fire department. His interests included studying military history, he loved sports, especially the Pirates, Penguins, and Steelers and was an avid Penn State fan attending tailgates with friends and family. He was also a member of Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church.

Friends and family will be received at the Heintzelman Funeral Home, 1034 Benner Pike, State College on Sunday July 10 from 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm where a guest book can be signed or condolences can be sent to the family at www.heintzelmanfuneralhome.com. A funeral mass will be held at Our Lady of Victory, 820 Westerly Parkway, State College on Monday July 11 at 10:30am. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donation be made to Penn State Thon at www.thon.org.
