Donald Hugh Holly Sr., 68, of State College, died Thursday, February 21, 2008, at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville after a long battle with heart related issues.
He was born February 7, 1940 in Manhattan, NY, a son of the late Hugh L. Holly and Leona Huntemann.
On May 29, 1965, he married his sweetheart, Erika Mueller, who survives at home. He is also survived by a daughter, Doreen Holly of Pennsylvania and a son, Donald Hugh Holly Jr. and his wife Kristen and their children, Jordan and Katherine of Illinois; a sister, Virginia Searing, residing in Guatemala, C.A., three brothers, Jack Searing of Colorado, Frank Searing of Florida, and Kevin Holly of Illinois. He was preceded in death by his beloved stepmother Virginia Searing Holly, and his brothers, Charles Holly and Edward Searing. He is also survived by many much loved nieces and nephews, and a bounty of good friends.
He began his high school career at Iona Prep in New York before graduating from St. Francis Prep School in Pennsylvania. He later attended their junior college. He began working as a salesman for Better Brands in 1960. He remained with this company as it changed hands and was purchased by Phillip Morris. He retired from the Miller Brewing Division of this company as a sales manager in 1996.
He was a member of Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church in State College. As his children attended Penn State University, he developed a deep love of the spirit of Penn State. He was a season ticket holder since 1984, and tailgated enthusiastically until last year when his health prevented him from this joy. Some of his other passions were golf, dogs, and visiting his wife's family in her native country, Germany.
He is most remembered for his ability to recite a great story, thus bringing laughter and joy to his family, friends, and anyone who happened to cross his path. He was a loving husband, father, brother, grandfather, and a wonderful friend.
A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 AM Tuesday, February 26, 2008, at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church, 820 Westerly Parkway, State College. After the service, a small gathering will occur at The Wellington Green's Clubhouse, Wellington Drive, State College.
