IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Douglas Norman
Gangler
November 23, 1949 – January 23, 2022
Douglas Norman Gangler,
of State College, Pennsylvania, born on November 23rd, 1949, passed away on
January 23rd, 2022 at the age of 72.
Born in Seattle,
Washington, Doug enjoyed his youth in Boy Scouts and was an avid sports
enthusiast, watching and playing baseball, basketball, tennis, and especially
golf. After graduation from the University of Washington in 1972, he traveled
extensively through Europe. This ignited his passion to continue seeing the
world, and he commissioned as an officer in the U.S. Navy in 1978.
While attending Supply
Corps Officer School in Athens, Georgia, Doug met the love of his life, Roberta
Lapinski, and they married on February 17th, 1978. Doug spent an illustrious
career of 24 years in the navy. He had tours of duty in San Diego, the
Philippines (where his son Steven was born), Arlington (where his daughter
Meredith was born), Spain, Italy, Guam, Belgium, and Silver Spring, Maryland.
He retired from active duty on September 1, 2001, after achieving the rank of
Commander as a Cryptologic Officer.
In retirement, Doug and
Roberta purchased a condominium near the Seven Springs ski resort, and built
their dream home in State College, splitting their time between both locations.
Doug had an entrepreneurial spirit - he created a tour business catered to
bringing small groups to Europe to visit historical World War I and II sites.
He was subsequently inspired to self-publish two books, one on the history of
rocketry, then a guide to the World War I sites he featured on his tours.
Doug was preceded in
death by his father Frank Norman Gangler, mother Margaret Jensen Gangler, and
wife Roberta Lapinski Gangler. He is survived by his two sisters, Julie Gangler
and Susan Gangler Landgren, daughter Meredith Gangler, his son and daughter-in-law
Steven Norman Gangler and Lindsey Martin Gangler, grandson Alexander Norman
Gangler, and his extended family and many friends.
