Doyle E. Poorman, 85, of rural Port Matilda, died Wednesday, June 27, 2007, at Epworth Manor in Tyrone
He was born January 6, 1922, at Houserville, a son of the late Merrill and Gertrude Rishel Poorman.
On Oct. 20, 1948, he married Martha J. Stoner who survives at home.
In addition to his wife he is survived by two sons, John C. Poorman and his wife Sharon, of Rural Port Matilda, and Phil M. Poorman and his wife Marcia, of Antes Fort; six grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
A son Rickey preceded him in death on November 1, 1959. His parents, two sisters, Mary Foster and Ruth Whiteman and one brother, Ralph Poorman, also preceded him in death.
Doyle served in the U. S. Army during World War II, from January 2, 1943 until January 13, 1946, earning the rank of Staff Sergeant. He served in France and England as motor NCO in charge of 90 trucks, keeping records, and checking conditions of the equipment. He also supervised the work of 45 men and a group of war prisoners who served as drivers. He earned a good conduct medal, a European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal and World War II Victory Medal.
Early in life Mr. Poorman worked at Cerro Metals near Bellefonte. He later went to work for the U. S. Postal Service, working various positions and routes, retiring as a letter carrier in 1984.
He was a member of the Port Matilda Sportsman's club and enjoyed hunting, and watching sports.
Friends will be received from 6 - 8 p. m. Friday, June 29, 2007, at Mark D. Heintzelman Funeral and Cremation Service, 1034 Benner Pike, State College, PA. The funeral will be at 2:30 p. m. Saturday at the funeral home with the Rev. Rodger Traxler officiating.
