Edward J. Van Allen, Esq., 65, State College lawyer, passed away on Thursday, September 14, 2006, at Mount Nittany Medical Center. He was born in Titusville, Pennsylvania in 1941, to the late Elizabeth Roden and Edward J. Van Allen, Jr. Edward was also predeceased by his daughter Leigh Ann Van Allen, of Manhattan, NY. He is survived by Diane Watson Van Allen, his wife of 41 years from Seneca, PA, his son, John Edward Van Allen, Esq. of Harrisburg, his daughters, Lynley Van Allen Brinkman of State College and Laurel Van Allen Brannon of Pittsburgh and his granddaughter Riley Brinkman, of State College and his grandson Ryan Siatkowsky of Pittsburgh. His sister Karen Cope resides in Erie. Edward was graduated from Titusville High School in 1959, attended Penn State until a car accident relocated him to Clarion University where he was graduated in 1965, with a triple major, named to Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities, and served as President of Theta XI fraternity. He was graduated from George Washington University School of Law, earning a Juris Doctor with Honors in 1971. Edward was employed by Montgomery County Public Schools in 1965 first teaching science at Thomas W. Pyle, Jr. High in Bethesda, MD and then biology at Thomas S. Wootton Senior High School in Rockville, MD. He was employed as an associate lawyer by the law firm of Kirkpatrick and Lockhart in Pittsburgh in 1971, became partner from 1979 to 1990 representing the steel industry, department stores, colleges and school districts, major hospitals and banks as he earned an AV rating and again named to Who's Who in America. He found time to volunteer legal services for many years to Peters Township Zoning Hearing Board in McMurray, PA. He also assisted in raising funds for Children's Hospital in Pittsburgh who saved his daughter Leigh Ann's life when she was 2 ½. He supported with his own funds his wife's efforts to employ the unemployed as the steel industry was declining and donated much money, time and effort along with his wife to assist in helping prevent child abuse, an effort which the Van Allen family has continued to the present along with the Pittsburgh and Mt. Lebanon Police and Muhammad Ali. When he formed his own law firm in State College, PA, he represented many clients in age discrimination cases pro bono. In State College he was an active member of the University Club serving as president for two years and was a member of Spring Creek Presbyterian Church in Lemont. He loved the law, history, especially studying the Civil War, music, travel with his family and football attending with his son, John, placekicking camps across the US. Internment will be in Sewickley Cemetery in Sewickley, PA. Private memorial services will be held in Sewickley and on Sanibel Island, Florida. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in his name to Spring Creek Presbyterian Church in Lemont, PA, Mount Nittany Medical Center, State College, PA or the Tell Foundation in State College which deals child abuse.
