Eleanor Brewer Schempf, 91, formerly of Linden Hall, died at the Fairways in Brookline on June 2, 2004.
She was born March 31, 1913, a daughter of Paul James and Amanda Zimmerman Brewer of Madison, WI who preceded her in death along with a brother, P. James Brewer Jr. of Fergus Fall, MN and her husband John M. Schempf. She is survived by a brother Donald Brewer of Petaluma, CA, a son John B. Schempf of Windsor VT, a daughter Paula S. Carroll of Honolulu, HI, a son Peter W. Schempf of State College, PA, four grandchildren, and two great grandchildren.
Valedictorian of her high school class, she received her undergraduate degree from the University of Wisconsin in 1934, then completed a one year practicum in dietetics at Johns Hopkins University. Married in 1935, she then entered graduate school and earned a Master of Science degree from Cornell University in 1938.
After WWII she and her husband settled in Linden Hall in 1946 where she continued as a stay-at- home mom raising three children, a commitment for which they will be forever grateful.
Much of her life was spent as a volunteer in numerous civic, professional and historical organizations. In 1938 she was awarded the American Cancer Society 30 Year Volunteer Pin, and the Order of the Rose in recognition of being an alpha Xi Delta alumna for 50 years, She served many years as a secretary for both local chapters of the League of Women Voters and the American association of University Women. She volunteered 1400 hours of her time in the snack bar of Centre Community Hospital and many more as docent at the Boal Mansion and the Boalsburg Heritage Museum. She was also a longstanding member of The Philanthropic Educational organization (P.E.O.) supporting the education fo women.
In addition to her beloved farm house, she enjoyed traveling throughout the world with her husband and family, and her trademark smile served us well all the way to the end.
