Eleanore Demarest Hawn, 86, after a lengthy illness, went to be with her Lord and Saviour from Westminister Woods, Huntingdon, Pennsylvania on October 20, 2009.
Born August 18, 1923 in Hanover, Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of the late Dr. Edwin and Ruby Demarest of Huntingdon. She was united in marriage to Harold Hawn on August 24, 1941, who preceded her in death on June 21, 2009.
Eleanore is survived by one daughter, Lyndsey of Deland, Florida; one sister, Jeannette Rumberger of Huntingdon; a daughter-in-law, Patricia, a grandson, Edwin and granddaughter, Laura of Norfolk, Virginia, and a number of nieces and nephews. In addition, she is survived by her sister-in-law, Joyce Parks of Huntingdon.
Eleanore graduated from Huntingdon High School in 1941 and did further studies in music and banking at Old Dominion University. She followed her husband, Harold, wherever his military service took them. She was an avid banker, having served as teller, head teller, note teller, manuals writer, and worked in the proof department and administrative assistant in data processing for 50 years in banks in Texas, Indiana, Idaho, New York and Virginia.
She was a dedicated member of Emmanuel Baptist Church in Tyrone. When she retired from banking in 1989, she and her husband served as volunteer music missionaries in the Mission Service Corps of the Southern Baptist Church. They were assigned to the Baptist Convention of Pennsylvania/South Jersey, and for a period of 15 years, they established and directed church choirs of all ages, and helped numerous small churches with their music ministries. They conducted music workshops, clinics and conferences for the Baptist Convention of Pennsylvania/South Jersey at the local, state and national levels.
Eleanore enjoyed serving the Lord, her family, needlework, helping her husband, Harold, as she constumed and sang in numerous operas, musicals at Old Dominion University and choirs as they established, developed and conducted their church music ministries.
There will be no viewing of the body. Internment and the graveside service will be held at the convenience of the family at the Centre County Memorial Park in State College, Pennsylvania, with Pastor Jack Wiley, Emmanuel Baptist Church, Tyrone, Pennsylvania officiating.
