Obituary

Mrs. Elizabeth S. Light, 81, beloved wife, mother and grandmother, of State College, PA, died Friday, February 18, 2005, in the Anthony House at Foxdale Village in State College.
Mrs. Light was educated in the Farmville, NC public schools. A registered nurse, she attended the Spring Grove School of nursing in Catonsville, MD. Following her graduation, she worked there for 2 ½ years as a psychiatric nurse. From 1942 to 1944, she served as a certified Red Cross volunteer in the Baltimore area.
In November 1944, she was married to Earl L. Swanger who died Dec. 1954.
She came to State College in 1945. From 1946 to 1949 she served in an administrative office with the State College Area Schools. She was an administrative assistant to the Penn State University Scheduling Officer from 1955 to 1961.
On August 17, 1961 she married Dr. John H. Light who preceded her in death on October 26, 2000.
She was a member of St. Andrews Episcopal Church in State College, and served as a representative of the State College Council of Church Women. Mrs. Light was vice president of the Centre County Medical Society from 1963 to 1964. An avid birdwatcher, she was a member of the Bird Club of State College. She enjoyed many handcrafts such as knitting, embroidery and crewel work. She also worked on occasion as a nurse/receptionist or bookkeeper in her late husband's medical office.
Born in Farmville, NC, May 8, 1923, she was a daughter of the late Walter I. and Eva Mae Boyce Stocks.
Surviving are two daughters, Linda Swanger Leslie of State College, and Mary Ann Meck of Raleigh, NC; three sons, Terry L. Swanger of State College, PA, Charles R. Light of Grangeville Idaho and John J. Light of Hamilton, OH; three sisters, Joyce Spain of Scott Depot, W. VA, Eva Mae Schackelford of Farmville, NC, Barbara A. Cahoon of New Bern, NC; one brother Jimmie E. Stocks of Scott Depot, W VA and four grandchildren Brianne Slane, Sean Slane, Jenna Meck, and Rosanne Magers. She was preceded in death by four brothers.
Betty was the essence of a community servant, caring neighbor, loving wife and nurturing mother, teaching us all to put others first. She was loved and admired by all who came to know her, and will be sorely missed.
Friends will be received from to 6 to 8 p. m., Monday, February 21, 2005, at the Eloise B. Kyper Funeral Home Inc., 1034 Benner Pike, State College, PA. The funeral will be held at 11:00 a. m. on Tuesday, February 22, 2005 at, St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, 208 W. Foster Ave., State College, PA; with the Rev. Larry J. Hofer officiating. Burial will be in Centre County Memorial Park, 1032 Benner Pike, State College, PA
