Obituary

Elvira (Vi) Meyer Duncan, 93, of Port Matilda, died Sunday, March 1, 2015 at Windy Hill Nursing Center in Philipsburg.

She was born December 23, 1921, in Lewistown, a daughter of the late Raymond G. and Emma Woods Young.

She was married to Kenneth L Meyer September 21, 1946; who preceded her in death May 12, 1981. On September 13, 1987 she married Charles H. Duncan who preceded her in death August 2, 1995.

Vi was a 1940 graduate of Lewistown High School.

Mrs. Duncan worked for Bell Telephone Company for thirty one years. Early in life she was employed by Arrow Shirt Company in Lewistown for six years; and later at Penn State University for two and one half years and with the Stewart Howe Alumni Association in State College for several years.

Mrs. Duncan attended State College Christian and Missionary Church, the Port Matilda United Methodist Church, and the Port Matilda Presbyterian Church. She was a member of Concerned Citizens of Lemont, having served as secretary and president of the Lemont Village Association. Vi also served on the board of directors of Bell-Penelec Federal Credit Union in Altoona, and was a member of the Bell Telephone Pioneers of America. Always interested in her community, she served as a past president of the Senior Citizens Advisory Commission as well as serving as a representative of College Township for the Commission. Her other memberships included AARP; Port Matilda Area Senior Citizens Club and the State College Community Theater.

In addition to her forward thinking and outstanding community service, she found time and cherished the time spent with her grandsons, enjoyed gardening, loved animals and spending her winters at Surfside Beach in South Carolina.

Mrs. Duncan was elected Mayor of Port Matilda, serving multiple terms.

Surviving Mrs. Duncan is one daughter Elaine Cassin and her husband James of State College; two grandsons Kelly Smeltz and his wife Shelley and Kerry Smeltz and his wife Shanna; and a great grandson John.

In addition to her parents and husbands, she was preceded in death by a sister Ruth Y. Elliot; and a brother Elwood R. Young. She was the last of her generation.

Friends will be received from 10 to 11 am Thursday, March 5, 2015 at Mark D. Heintzelman Funeral and Cremation Service, 1034 Benner Pike, State College, PA. The funeral will follow at 11 am with the Reverend Susan Williamson officiating. Burial will be private at Centre County Memorial Park.
