Esther McCulloch Hawkinson, 88, of Valley View Retirement Center, Belleville, PA, formerly of State College, died Thursday, September 4, 2008, at Valley View Haven, Belleville. She was born September 19, 1919 in Donora, PA, a daughter of the late Alexander and Rebecca Weanie McCulloch. On March 15, 1952, she married Walter A. Hawkinson who preceded her in death November 30, 1976. She is survived by a daughter Karin Hawkinson of Arlington, MA; one son James W. Hawkinson of Emmaus; one sister Ruth Lauck of Pennsylvania Furnace; one brother, Kenneth McCulloch of Zelinople; and four grandchildren, Lillian Ruth, Robin Emily, Gator James and Gracie James. Mrs. Hawkinson worked as a secretary to the Vice President of Research and Graduate Studies at Penn State University retiring in 1982. She was a member of Pine Hall Lutheran Church, State College, and more recently while living at Belleville was a member of West Kishacoquillas Presbyterian Church in Belleville. While living in State College, she was a member of the State College Woman's Club. She was an active volunteer at the former Centre Community Hospital Gift Shop. On Monday nights she volunteered at the Schlow Library for many years, and was active with the American Red Cross Bloodmobile. At her request there will be no public visitation, however, a public memorial service will be held at 1:00 p. m. Saturday, October 4, 2008 the Valley View Retirement Community Chapel, with the Reverend Sam Strohm and the Reverend Galen Sharp officiating. Burial will be at Centre County Memorial Park, 1032 Benner Pike, State College, PA In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to Schlow Centre Region Library, 211 S.
