Obituary

Everett R. McLaughlin, a kind, gentle and giving man, passed away on October 22, 2004. He was born March 28, 1918 in Allegheny Township, Westmoreland County, PA to the late J. Orr and Mary Louise Reed McLaughlin. He left Westmoreland County to attend Westminster College in 1935, where he met his future wife, Lois Elliott of Mckees Rocks, PA. Everett then moved to Penn State in 1936 to finish his education in engineering. He has been a resident of State College ever since. He was employed as faculty member in engineering by Penn State in 1941. He retired from the Department of Architectural Engineering as Professor Emeritus in 1978. He was a member of Sigma Xi, and a life member of the Penn State Alumni Association. In addition to his 38 year career at Penn State, He was an active member of the State College community. He served as President and on the Board of Directors of the Centre County Hisorical Society, and was a smiling but softspoken docent welcoming visitors to the Centre Furnace Mansion, he has been a long-time member and Treasurer of the Civil War Roundtable, was involved in the Centre County Federation of Sportsman's Clubs, he served on the Board of Director's of the Centre Commuinty Hospital, and has been an active member of the State College Presbyterian Church since 1936. He is survived by his sons, Elliott R. Mclaughlin of State College and Robert L. McLaughlin of Howard. A daughter, Pamela J. Harner of State College; four grandchildren, Todd Harner of Akron, OH; Christopher Harner of State College; Douglas Mclaughlin of Northridge, CA; and Lisa McLaughlin of State College; four gr-grandchildren, Elena, Tatum and Clayton Harner and Emma Mclaughlin; and a sister Ethel Streator of Strattanville. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Lois. Everett R. McLaughlin will be missed by members of the Penn State and State College communities. "Gramps" will be dearly missed by his family and friends. Visitation will be from 7-9 pm, Monday, October 25, 2004 at the Eloise B. Kyper Funeral Home,Inc., 1034 Benner Pike, State College, PA, 16801. Funeral services will be at 11:00 am, Tuesday October 26, 2004 at the State College Presbyterian Church,132 W. Beaver Ave. State College, PA 16801, with the Rev. Dr. Charles Curley and Rev. Joel T. Blunk officiating. In lieu of flowers,memorial contributions can be made to The American Cancer Society,in memory of Everett Mclaughlin; The State College Presbyterian Church, or to The Centre County Historical Society.
