Obituary

Gerald Vernon Bergman, aged 71 years, of State College, PA quietly passed from this life to the next at 5:30 am on 8-30-18.  Jerry was surrounded by loved ones at home, after a valiant battle with cancer.

A 1 st Lieutenant in the Navy, Jerry met his loving wife of 45 years, Linda (Conrad) of Loretto, PA, at NavShips in Washington, DC.   A graduate of Penn State University, Jerry and Linda returned to the area after 20 years in Orlando and then Palm Beach Gardens, FL.

Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Kathryn (Prather) Bergman and two infant sisters.  He is survived and deeply loved by his brother Allen Bergman of Benicia, CA, his wife Linda (Conrad) of State College, four children, Angela (Brockman) of Hollidaysburg, PA, Adam of Orlando, FL, Kristin of Carrboro, NC and Jonathan who recently moved to St. Louis, MO.  Jerry also enjoyed the gift of five grandchildren – Carson (18), Sophia (17), Conrad (13), Joshua (7) and David (5).

Jerry enjoyed a diverse entrepreneurial career life, but his real passion was for chess, devoting much of his recent years to the Donald Byrne Memorial Chess Club in State College.  Kind, honest, intelligent, loving and true…  he was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend…  he will be greatly missed, but we take comfort in knowing he had many treasures stored up in Heaven.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 A.M., Tuesday, September 4, 2018 at the Mt. Nittany United Methodist Church, 1500 E. Branch Road, State College, PA.  Burial will be private with military honors in accord at the Boalsburg Cemetery, Boalsburg, PA.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Mark D. Heintzelman Funeral & Cremation Services, PC, 1034 Benner Pike, State College, PA 16801.
