IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Glenn H.
Johnstonbaugh, Jr.
December 7, 1927 – July 17, 2022
Glenn H. Johnstonbaugh, Jr., 94, of Port Matilda, passed
away on Sunday, July 17, 2022 at Wynwood House at Greenhills in State College,
after a brief battle with cancer.
Glenn was born in a farmhouse near Matternville on December
7, 1927. He was the oldest of seven
children born to Glenn and Margaret (Beher) Johnstonbaugh. His siblings include Jane Moyer (Dorsey),
Joseph (Sally), Anna Mary, Patricia Kidder (Robert), Lois Martz (John), and
Bonnie Kustanbauter (James).
Glenn attended a one room school for the first eight years,
Bellefonte High School for two years, then graduated from State College High
School in 1946. Following graduation he worked
several construction jobs until 1949 when he joined the Penn State Physical Plant
as a carpenter's helper. In September of
1950 he was drafted into the Army with the first group to leave Centre County
during the Korean War. After training,
he was assigned to the 82nd Tank Battalion as a gunner serving as a
Tank Commander and attaining the rank of Sergeant First Class until his
discharge in June, 1952. He then
returned to Penn State as an apprentice carpenter under the G.I. Bill and
retired with 40 years service in 1989 as a Trades Supervisor.
In 1972 Glenn married the former Frances Bloom and they
lived for more than a decade in Pleasant Gap until 1984 when they built their home
in Port Matilda. Together they started a
craft business with Glenn creating hundreds of designs in wooden marketry
pictures and Fran creating embroidered shirts.
They met many wonderful people and made many friends on their craft "circuit"
including being founding participants in the Boalsburg Peoples Choice Arts
Festival as well as being a regular fixture on the midway at Grange Fair until
their advancing ages forced them to retire.
Glenn took great pride in his Penn State licensed Nittany Lion wooden
marketry pictures of which he made hundreds that are now located around the
globe.
Glenn's love of his garden continued throughout his
life. When his health prohibited him
from working in the ground, he enjoyed container gardening on his deck. He was an avid, curious reader with many
interests, including the Korean War and the extraterrestrial. He was a member of the State College Lodge
#200 Masons and the Bellefonte Chapter of the Royal Arch Masons, Tall
Cedars/Centre Forest, Pleasant Gap American Legion #867, Bellefonte VFW (Life
Member), Pleasant Gap Fire Company, Central District Volunteer Fireman's
Association, and the Penn State Wrestling Club. On June 26, 2022, he proudly attended a
ceremony held at the Old Fort Legion and was honored for his military service by
the Nittany Chapter of the Quilts of Valor.
In keeping with Glenn's directions, he wanted to be sure
those reading these words about him would know that "it's been a great ride!"
Glenn is survived by his wife of almost 50 years, Frances,
daughter Cindy Johnstonbaugh Lawrence (Tom), stepson Michael Bloom, and
stepdaughter Cathy Bloom Guzik (William).
Also surviving are his grandchildren Matthew Lawrence, Andrew Lawrence,
Melissa Hoover, Matthew Monsell (Amber),
Aaron Guzik (Marissa), and Lauren Guzik Disciascio (Jimmy); seven great
grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
Glenn is pre deceased by his parents, his sisters Anna Mary
Johnstonbaugh and Jane Moyer, his son Ronald Johnstonbaugh, his grandson Joshua
Lawrence, and his daughter-in-law Stearlyn Bloom.
Friends will be received (red/white/blue casual
attire would be a wonderful tribute) from 10:00-11:00 a.m. on Thursday, July
21, 2022 at the Haky/Georgiana Centre County Funeral Home located at 1034
Benner Pike, State College. The funeral

heartfelt thanks to the kind, caring individuals at Mt. Nittany Medical Center,
