Obituary

Harold Baxter Black, 75, died on April 27, 2009 at home in Centre Hall.
He was born on February 16, 1934 in Augusta, Georgia to Mabel Schley and Henry Black, Sr. On April 20, 1985 he married Barbara Sherlock, who survives at home.
Harold graduated from Lucy C. Laney High School in Augusta Georgia. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1951, and retired after 27 years in 1978, attaining the rank of Commissioned Warrant Office 4 (CWO4) Boatswain (Bo'sun). He served with the U.S. Navy in Korea and with the U.S. Navy and U.S. Army in Vietnam. He also attended Penn State University.
He was a member of State College Elks Lodge 1600, where he served two terms as Exalted Ruler. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 245 in State College, Pennsylvania.
In addition to his wife, Harold is survived by his children, Michael Black, Maria Gause (Edward), and Marcy Black, all of Poway, California, Courtney Black (Luis Rodriguez) of Brooklyn, New York, and Ilana Black of State College and his grandsons Zachary Gibson-Black, Nicholas Rodriguez, Michael Black-Hall, and granddaughter Emery Rodriguez. He is also survived by his sisters Pearlie Evans of Atlantic City, New Jersey and Mary Black of Augusta, Georgia, and his first wife, Shirley Gibson Black, of Poway, California. He was preceded in death by his brothers Henry Black and Isaac Black and sisters Turna Mae Black and Geneva Washington.
Services will be at the convenience of the family.
