Helen S. Byers, 97, of State College, died Monday, November 3, 2008, at Centre Crest Nursing Center in Bellefonte.
She was born October 29, 1911, in Yeagertown, the daughter of Harry C. and Eliza Reynolds Swyers.
In 1933, she married Harold Byers who preceded her in death June 2, 1997.
Mrs. Byers is survived by one son, James R. Byers of State College and eight grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and husband, Helen was preceded in death by a son Hal K. Byers, three brothers and two sisters, and was the last family member of her generation.
After graduating from Yeagertown High School, she attended Shippensburg Normal School, and then taught in the Derry Township School District.
She was baptized and confirmed a Lutheran at The Holy Communion Lutheran Church in Yeagertown. After her marriage, she moved to State College and became a member of Grace Lutheran Church, in State College. In her early life she was active in the Sunday School, Missionary Society, and other church related organizations.
Mrs. Byers was a volunteer worker for the American Red Cross for many years, and a life member of the Mt. Nittany Medical Center Auxiliary.
A private memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family.
