Henry L. Yeagley Jr., 81, of Foxdale Village in State College, died Thursday, October 30, 2003, at the Cornell University Medical Center, New York Presbyterian Hospital in New York City.
He was born June 9, 1922, in York, PA, a son of the late Blanche Whitman and Henry Yeagley Sr.
On May 8, 1943 he married Gladys Beck in State College.
He served in the U. S. Army Air Corps from 1943 to 1946 during World War II.
A 1940 graduate of State College High School, he captained the soccer and tennis teams. In 1946, he graduated with a B.A. in economics and earned a master's degree in business administration in 1960, both from Penn State where he was a member and past adviser of of Phi Delta Theta. He was also a graduate of the College Business Management Institute of the University of Kentucky.
A 34 year Penn State staff member, he retired in 1984 as assistant vice president emeritus for Physical Plant. A member of the National Association of Physical Plant Administrators, he had served as president of the eastern region and vice president for education.
For 60 years he was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church in State College and was a longtime church school teacher and superintendent.
He served a term on State College Borough Council and for 16 years was appointed deputy mayor during Mayor Arnold Addison's tenure.
In 1985 he became a member of the Centre County Airport Authority, serving as treasurer from 1990 until his death.
He was a founding member of the following entities: William Jeffrey Soccer League, in which he coached for eight years, Donald W. Carruthers Jr. Awards; Centre County Senior Games; and Prostate Cancer Support Group.
He had been coaching the Penns valley grades seven and eight AYSO girl's soccer team for the past eight years.
His fraternal associations include State College Lodge 700 Free and Accepted Masons for 50 years Constans Commandery 33 Knights Templar. He was a life member of Bellefonte Chapter 241, Royal arch Masons; BPO Elks 1600 State College; and American Legion Post 245 State College, PA
Professional memberships included Centre County Engineers Society, Society for Advancement of Management, and Building research Institute.
He had served the Centre County Heart Association as a board member, assistant county chairman, and county chairman and member of the planning committee of United Way.
An active bicyclist, he had averaged riding 200 miles each month beginning in 1983 and had played tennis since 9 years of age.
He is survived by his wife; a son Henry L Yeagley III, and his wife Carol, and their children, Leanne, Richard"Rick" and Julia of spring Mills; a daughter, Rebecca Lee and her husband Burton Israel, and their Children Steven, Benjamin and Chandra of Mansfield; and a daughter Dena Yeagley and her daughter Abigail of State College, a great granddaughter, Brook Jordan Israel; a sister Elizabeth Yeagley White of Laguna Niguel, CA; and a brother Richard Whitman Yeagley and his wife Gun-Britt Mary of Bailey CO. Another son Stephen Beck Yeagley died in 1977 at age 27; a granddaughter Saranom Israel also preceded him in death.
Friends will be received on Sunday Nov. 2, 2003 from 1-4 and 6-9 p. m. at Mark D. Heintzelman Funeral Service, 226 S. Pennsylvania Ave. Centre Hall, PA.
There will be a memorial service at 2:00 p. m. Sunday, November 9, 2003 at Foxdale Village, 500 Marylyn Ave., State College.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that either cash donations or blood donations be made in Mr. Yeagley's memory to the American Red Cross, 121 1/2 East Beaver Ave., State College, PA
