Herbert "Herb" Ammon Horner, 81 of rural Port Matilda, went home to be with his Lord Monday, September 16, 2013 at the Hearthside Nursing and Rehabilitation Center at State College.
He was born Feb. 25, 1932 at Lemont, a son of the late Edward and Viola Bubb Horner.
On April 5, 1958 he married Gail A. Frehn who survives at home.
Herb was a 1951 graduate of State College High School and attended both Penn State University and Lycoming College. He served in the U. S. Army during the Korean War.
Early in life he worked for Erie Tech and for HRB Singer both in State College, then owned and operated Horner's Market in Millheim and finished his working career as a housing supervisor at Penn State University.
Mr. Horner was an active member of Calvary Bible Church, Centre Hall where he served on the Board of Deacons, and as a Sunday School Teacher. His most important role was helping others to come to know Christ as their personal Savior. He led over 1400 persons to faith in Christ in his lifetime. He was also faithfully involved in Prison Ministry. Herb was an avid and faithful Bible reader. Early in life he enjoyed hunting, and loved the out of doors and spending time with his family.
Surviving Mr. Horner in addition to his wife are three sons, Dr. Timothy H. Horner and his wife Glenna of Danville, IL, Pastor Thomas E. Horner and his wife Valerie of Myersdale, and David L. Horner and his wife Vicky of Burbank, IL; fourteen grandchildren, Alyssa M. Woodhull (Phillip), Timothy D. Horner (Julie Ann), Mark A. Horner, Stephen P. Horner, Cassie M. Beach (Matthew), Kendra S. Horner, Christopher T. Horner, Daniel S. Horner, Bryan D. Horner (Faith), Kevin D. Horner, Shannon E. Horner, Aaron P. Horner, Megan A. Horner and Katelyn A. Horner; three great grandchildren, Hannah G. and Eric J. Beach and Elisabeth G. Horner.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Horner was preceded in death by a son Daniel P. Horner; three sisters, Agnes Robinson, Edith Rider and Frances Houtz; and four brothers, Clifford, Russell, Elwood and George Horner.
Friends will be received from 2 - 4 p. m. Sunday, Sept. 22, 2013 at Calvary Bible Church, 600 N. Pennsylvania Ave. Centre Hall, PA and from 9:00 a. m. until 10:00 a. m. Monday, September 23, 2013 at the church. The funeral service will follow immediately at 10:00 a. m. at the church with Pastor Rick Gilbaugh officiating. Burial will be in the Fairview Cemetery in Millheim.
