Hilda Irene Snyder, 97, of East Stroudsburg, PA, formerly of State College, died Tuesday, April 25, 2006 at Stroud Manor in East Stroudsburg.
She was born July 13, 1908, in Boalsburg, a daughter of the late Harry W. and Helen Myers Lonberger.
On August 10, 1946, she married Merrill R. Snyder who preceded her in death March 18, 1993.
She is survived by a daughter Vicky Stoner and her husband Scott, of Hopatcong, NJ, and two grandchildren, Steven Stoner and his wife Kerry and Elaine Stoner and her fianc Randy. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Rose Eva Lonberger and Ruth P. Hancock; and three brothers, Edgar A., John P. and Daniel Lonberger.
Hilda graduated from State College High School in 1926, and from District of Columbia General Hospital School of Nursing in 1931 as a registered nurse. She did graduate work at Johns Hopkins University Graduate School of Nursing, graduating in 1934.
She served in the U. S. Army Nurse Corps from December 18, 1941 until December 13, 1945 as a charge operating room nurse. She attained the rank of First Lieutenant and was awarded a service ribbon and received a lapel button on Sept. 2, 1945.
Hilda worked as a registered nurse at Belleview Hospital in New York City and at Methodist Hospital in Houston TX, prior to going into the service in 1941.
Mrs. Snyder was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, America Legion Post 245, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, the Disabled American Veterans and a life member of the Graduate Nurses Study Club all of State College.
Friends will be received from 10:00 a. m. Thursday, April 27, 2006 until 11:00 a. m. Mark D. Heintzelman Funeral and Cremation Service, 1034 Benner Pike, State College, PA. The funeral will be at 11:00 a.m. with the Rev. P. Stevens Lynn officiating. Burial will be in Centre County Memorial Park, 1032 Benner Pike, State College, PA.
