James E. Schirm, 82, of State College, died Sunday, April 16, 2017, at his residence

He was born May 14, 1934 in Alexandria, PA a son of the late Lewis Samuel and Verna Catherine (David) Schirm.

On November 15, 1997, at the Houserville United Methodist Church, he married Marlene O. Phillips, who preceded him in death on April 30, 2013.

Jim was US Navy Veteran serving actively and in the reserves for 33 years, retiring in 1985.

He was a High School teacher in Newport from 1973-1994 and was an avid fly fisherman.

James was a member of the Mt. Nittany United Methodist Church. He was a life member of the State College F & AM 700, the Altoona Consistory where he was 32 degree and the Jaffa Shrine where he was a 50 year life member and a member of their Legion of Honor. He was also a life member of the BPOE 1600, the NERA (Naval Enlisted Reserve Association), the USS English DD 696 where he was a past president and Tall Cedars of Lebanon.

James is survived by his daughter Pamela Schirm; two step-daughters, Laurie Dunheimer (George) and Renee Hoover (Denny); one sister, Donna (Jay) Deamer and two sisters-in-law, Theora Smeal and Connie (Ed) Marker.

In addition to his parents and second wife he was preceded in death by his first wife, Frances (Croyle) Schirm; a brother, David Hesser; and two step children, Deborah Nelson and Michael McMurray.

Friends will be received from 6:00 to 8:00 PM on Wednesday, April 19, 2017 at the Mark D. Heintzelman Funeral & Cremation Services, 1034 Benner Pike, State College, and Thursday, April 20th from 10 AM until time of funeral services at 11 AM at Mount Nittany United Methodist Church, 1500 E. Branch Road, State College, with Reverend Carl Hill officiating. Burial will follow at Centre County Memorial Park, 1032 Benner Pike, State College, with military honors in accord.
