James Joseph Smith, 77, of rural Bellefonte, died Tuesday, June 29, 2010 at Mt. Nittany Medical Center, at State College.
He was born March 13, 1933 in Haddon Heights, NJ a son of the late Harry J. and Anne V. McGonigal Smith.
In 1957, he married MaryEmily Dann who survives at home.
Mr. Smith served in the U. S. Navy during the Korean War. He earned an associate degree from Penn State Altoona. James served as a Spring Township Supervisor for many years. He retired from the Physical Plant at Penn State University.
His memberships included St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Bellefonte and the Pleasant Gap Lions Club. Mr. Smith was an avid Penn State Fan who also enjoyed fishing and hunting.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Shawn J. Smith and his wife Kelly of Bellefonte; four grandchildren, Megan, Elizabeth, Jennifer and Rebecca; five great grandchildren, Kaylee, Alex, Ryleigh, Caleb and Ashton; four sisters, Floss Barna of Audubon, NJ, Grace Blackwell of Marysville, WA, Ann Fry of State College, and Jean Malobicky and her husband Phil of New Kensington; one brother, Harry J. Smith and his wife Dorothy of Beach Haven, NJ; and many loving nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews.
One brother, John P. Smith preceded him in death.
Following his wishes there will be no public visitation, however a memorial mass is being planned for a later date to be announced.
