Obituary

John P. McElhoe 81, of State College, died Thursday, January 14, at Windy Hill Village, Philipsburg.

He was born May 5, 1934, near Reedsville, the son of the late Paul E. and Dorothy Royer McElhoe.

On April 3, 1969; at the Grand Island Presbyterian Church, Lock Haven; he married Janice Sweet McElhoe who survives at home.

John graduated from Armagh Brown High School. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Bloomsburg University, then went on to complete his Master of Education degree at Shippensburg University, with a reading specialist certification.

From June 24, 1957 to September 5, 1958, Mr. McElhoe served in the U. S. Army attached to the 8th Infantry Division, 708th Ordnance Battalion; earning a meritorious Achievement Award August 7, 1958. Most of his service time was spent in Germany

He spent thirty years as an educator in the Mifflin County School District, many of those years as a reading specialist. After developing an interest in real estate, he worked with Century 21, in sales and later became an appraiser, and finally worked as a VA appraiser.

He was a member of the Free and Accepted Masonic Lodge 2031 in Lewistown; and the Shrine in Harrisburg.

Family, teaching, theatre, the family cabin and lamp restoration were among the things he enjoyed most.

In addition to his wife Janice; he is survived by three daughters, Susan Lee Fulmer of Harrisburg, Diane Elizabeth Griffin of Fleetwood, and Jennifer Ann McElhoe of State College, and a son in law Christopher Greene; six grandchildren, Amanda, Ashley, Alexander, Ariel, Bria, and Danica; and one great grandson Kole.

A celebration of life will be held Wednesday, January 20 2016 at the Mountain View Country Club, 100 Elks Club Road, Boalsburg, PA. Receiving friends and family will begin at 11:00 a.m. Light refreshments and celebration of John's life will continue until until 2:15. During that time attendees are encouraged to share thoughts and memories of John. Committal services will be held at 3:00 p.m. at the Woodlawn Cemetery in Milroy, PA, with full Military Honors.
