Obituary

A life well lived….John Henry Mellott, 97, of State College, our loving father, grandfather, and friend, known to many as Pap, died peacefully on Friday, April 20, 2018.

Born on May 25, 1920 in Bainville, Montana, he was a son of the late Charlie and Lizzie Mellott.

On October 11, 1941, John married Elsie Clark Mellott who preceded him in death on April 8, 2012 after 70 years of marriage. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, one sister, and a great grandson, Drew.

Mr. Mellott was born with a passion for farming and never shied away from hard work, building a successful business, Mellott's Mobile Homes, on North Atherton Street.  He was a member of the Free and Accepted Masonic Lodge #700 in State College, having just received his 50 year anniversary lapel pin, A.A.S.R. Valley of Williamsport, Tall Cedars of Lebanon, Jaffa Shriners, Nittany Antique Machinery Association, and a lifetime member of the Port Matilda Sportsman's Club.  John was also a member of the Woodycrest United Methodist Church in State College.

Pap was a consummate storyteller and would tell anyone who would listen, stories of his youthful escapades and family history.  His family was the center of his world and his legacy lives on in his children and grandchildren, as well as many others.

He loved his hunting camp in Halfmoon Township that he purchased in 1951, walking through the woods and tinkering around the house.  John's favorite pastime was getting on one of his many tractors, farming and tending to his livestock at his farm in Port Matilda.  His appreciation for the glory and bounty of nature, that the good Lord gave him, was obvious.  John also enjoyed attending the Grange Fair for over half a century.

Surviving Mr. Mellott are two sons, Gerald A. Mellott [Susan] of York, PA, and Galen J. Mellott [Cheyrl] of Port Matilda; six grandchildren, Franklin D. Mellott [Sheri] of Boalsburg, Sherry D. Floyd [Patrick] of Jacksonville, FL, Donald J. Mellott of Solano Beach, CA, Wendy D. Mellott of Placentia, CA, Timothy G. Mellott [Beth Ann] of Ijamsville, MD, and Amy S. Lui [Vinson] of Placentia, CA; 14 great grandchildren, and 7 great-great grandchildren.  He is also survived by one sister, Ethel M. Phillips of Cumberland, MD, and one brother, Lloyd C. Mellott of State College.

Family and friends will be received from 6 – 8PM on Tuesday, April 24 at Mark D. Heintzelman Funeral and Cremation Service, 1034 Benner Pike, State College, PA.  Following the viewing, Mr. Mellott will be honored during a Masonic service.

Family and friends are also welcome at 9AM on Wednesday, April 25 at the same location followed immediately by the funeral service at 10AM.  The Reverend Dr. Renee Ford will be officiating.  A graveside service will be held at 2PM at the Everett Cemetery, Everett, PA.

The family would like to extend their appreciation for the loving care provided to Pap at the end of his life by Windy Hill Village, Philipsburg.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial contribution in John's memory may be made to the Free and Accepted Masonic Lodge #700, 240 South Fraser Street, State College, PA 16801.
