Jorge Augusto Pena, a retired faculty in Meteorology at Penn State died September 6, 2015 in his sleep at the Juniper Village.
He was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina to Jose Luis Pena and Ana Tiller de Pena. He studied Chemistry at the University of Buenos Aires, where he met his lifelong partner Rosa Gotzulsky. They married in 1946 and had two daughters. After receiving their doctorates in physical chemistry they worked in investigations together, their most notable being early attempts to control hail by seeding clouds with iodine salts.
Political upheavals forced them to move to the United States, arriving at Penn State in 1967, where they joined the Department of Meteorology. There, Jorge carried on with research into atmospheric chemistry.
After retiring in 1981 Jorge took up drawing and watercolor painting, and produced a considerable body of work, which was praised in the showings in which he participated. He was a long-time member of the Art Alliance. His own photographs taken when he and Rosa traveled the world inspired many of his paintings.
Jorge had a life-long passion for classical music. He read and listened constantly and attended concerts whenever possible. He and Rosa were fixtures at the concerts of the Pennsylvania Center Orchestra, Penns Woods, and Penn State's Music Department offerings. A thoughtful man, Jorge loved to read and discuss philosophy and religion. He had great admiration for Albert Camus, and later for Karen Armstrong. He also shared with Rosa vast knowledge and interest in the arts.
Another life-long passion was the love of cars and car racing. He was a superb driver and passed on his skills to Rosa and his two daughters. Behind the wheel Jorge was a happy man. He always explored the less travelled roads just to see where they led. His daughters believe that he secretly wanted to be a race car driver and he indulged this wish watching Formula 1 races on television. Later in life he became a devotee of tennis and would watch the major tournaments.
Two daughters, Adriana, and Edith survive him. As per his request there will be no memorial. Those who wish to honor his memory are encouraged to contribute to the Pennsylvania Center Orchestra, Penns Woods, or the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Centre County.
