Joseph V. (Joe) Intorre, 99, of State College, died Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2012.
Born March 8, 1913, in Nicholson Twp., Fayette Cty., PA, he was the son of the late Vincent and Filomena Gregorio Intorre.
On Nov. 27, 1941 he married the late Winifred Rishel in Richmond, VA.
He was a graduate of German Twp. High School. He also received B.A. (1936), M.S. (1937) and Ph.D. (1965) degrees from the Pennsylvania State University.
Beginning in 1938, Dr. Intorre was an instructor and supervisor in the first State College (WPA) driver training school. In 1939, he started a driving school for the Central West Virginia Automobile Club in Clarksburg, WV.
Hired by the Pennsylvania State University late in 1940 to do war training work, he went on to work with Professor Amos E. Neyhart, who was known as the father of driver education.
During his years at Penn State, as Supervisor of Motor Fleet Traffic Safety he was responsible for developing and presenting such programs as driver and safety education for teachers as well as motor fleet training programs. He conducted courses and workshops for driver and safety education throughout the United States and Canada.
A staff and faculty member for 33 years, he retired from the Pennsylvania State University in 1974.
A member of the American Automobile Association (AAA) since 1940, he served on the AAA Board of Directors beginning in 1941 and was recently named as AAA Director Emeritus.
He was a founder and past president of the Pennsylvania Association for Safety Education. In 1997, he received the prestigious Amos E. Neyhart Award from PASE.
Joe was the last surviving founding member and past president of the American Driver and Traffic Safety Association (ADTSEA).
He was also a Grand Knight in the Knights of Columbus, and a member of the PSU Quarterback Club and the PSU Tailback Club.
Predeceased by his wife, Winifred R. Intorre; brothers Salvatore and Angelo Intorre; and sisters Carmella Kimbell, Helen Intorre, Mary Schuman, and Rose Hyslop.
In addition, he is survived by four daughters, Sulane Intorre Breon, Yonnie Intorre Niebel and Cheree Intorre Jones of State College and Cindy Intorre of Baltimore; three sisters, Sandra Intorre; Jennie Jones, Louise Carr; and a brother-in law, Robert Hyslop; as well as six grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
Visitation will be 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at Our Lady of Victory Church, 820 Westerly Parkway, State College, PA.
A funeral mass will be held at OLV Church Tuesday, October 23 at 11 a.m.
