IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Larry Lee
Bunge
April 4, 1943 – January 9, 2024
Larry Lee Bunge, age 80, died January 9th, 2024 at his home in State College, PA. He passed away peacefully during the early morning hours while sleeping with a favorite spiritual music channel playing on his television. He was born April 4th, 1943 in Bloomsburg, PA, the son of the late Melva Alice (Yohey) and Lee Edgar Bunge and raised in the town of Espy in a home his father built. He would graduate High School from the former Scott Township High School, and following a brief college career he married the former Mary Alice Cubbage of West Virginia, They set up housekeeping and raised two sons in State College, PA. Mary Alice survives him today, and together they have endured the challenges the years present by staying active, enjoying simple meals and keeping close to family.
Larry in his younger years enjoyed sports cars and Road Rallys, working for Sears and the American Philatelic Society before becoming lifelong staff at Penn State University's Computer Center. During his career at the Comp Center he fulfilled many rolls, often as a Computer Operator, and later as a Supervisor manning the controls of the IBM mainframe during the late shift and most holidays. During his middle years he became infatuated with reading every original edition novel published in English from the 1800's to the mid-twentieth century. It is also noteworthy that he read the Centre Daily Times nearly every day for decades, completing the crossword and taking note of the health of his colleagues.
He retired in 2006 to enjoy traveling, hiking, and collecting pictures of nature in the wild. One of his greatest accomplishments is the extensive camping he did both alone and with his sons and two Grandsons in many of our nation's state and national parks. With his fearless adventurous spirit, he created a legacy of cherished memories, from camping under the stars to hiking uncharted trails, always with a keen eye for nature's wonders, especially the smallest bugs and snakes. His passion for travel and exploration was only matched by his joy in sharing these experiences with his family, whom he adored deeply.
In addition to Mary Alice Bunge, he is survived by two sons, Eric L. Bunge, Sr. and his wife Terri Ann (Nelson) of Bluffton, SC, and Mark D. Bunge and Katherine Nell (Khoury) Bunge of State College, PA; two grandsons, Eric L. Bunge, Jr and David Frank Bunge of State College, PA; one Aunt, Joan B. Yohey, age 93, of Danville, PA; and 10 cousins: Dave and John Yohey of Bloomsburg, PA, Linda Y. Sheeler of Mifflinville, PA, Debbi Yohey of East Stroudsburg, PA, Jeffery Cleaver and Brenda Rider of Mifflinville, PA, Brad Cleaver of South Carolina, Becky Bodnar of Berwick, PA, and siblings Shirley and Jack Breech of Catawissa, PA.
