Leonard G. Grove
Leonard George Grove, 81, of rural Bellefonte died Saturday, June 18, 2005, at Mt. Nittany Medical Center in State College.
He was born June 20, 1923, in Bellefonte, a son of the late Earl Burton and Florence Catherine Beezer Peters Grove.
Leonard was a 1947 graduate of Bellefonte High School.
An Army veteran, he served during World War II as a private first class until 1946 in the 920 Transport Unit Service Division. He served in North Africa, Italy, and Southern France. He received the American Service Medal, European African Middle Eastern Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal and the World War II Victory Medal.
Mr. Grove was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1600 in Bellefonte. He was a member of the Military Vehicle Preservation Association and the Pennsylvania Military Museum. He was also a former member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic church in Bellefonte. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting and auctions. In recent years, he enjoyed Military Vehicle preservation, particularly the Army "Mule" Mechanical M-274.
From 1949 through 1965, he built and remodeled homes in the Bellefonte area. Beginning in 1967, he built and managed Lenwood and Mt. Nittany Apartments in State College.
In addition to his former spouse Doris Grove, he is survived by six children, three sons, David Leonard Grove and his wife Kathleen of Minneapolis St. Paul, MN, Michael Roy Grove of Palm City, FL and Barry Earl Grove of Karthaus; three daughters, Elizabeth Anne Jones and her husband M. Scott of Boalsburg, Maria Aileen Heverly of Pleasant Gap, and Rosalie Sue Keene and her husband Mark of State College, PA; six grandchildren, Olivia Anne Jones, Will Samuel Jones and Liam Grove Jones all of Boalsburg; Austin Roy Keene, Sophia Rose Keene and Forrest Earl Keene all of State College; one brother Paul A. Grove and his wife Wava, of Houserville; two sisters, Freda I. Crummey and her husband Harry of State College and Barbara Confer of Howard and many nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received from 6 - 8 p. m. Tuesday, June 21, 2005 at the former Kyper Funeral Home, now Mark D. Heintzelman Funeral and Cremation Services, P. C., 1034 Benner Pike, State College, PA. The funeral will be at 10:30 a. m. Wednesday, June 22, at the funeral home with the Reverend Neil B. Yingling officiating. Burial with military honors, will follow immediately at Centre County Memorial Park, 1032 Benner Pike, State College, PA.
