Obituary

Marian Hummel February 4, 1914 -- October 11, 2005 Marian Hummel, 91, of State College, died Tuesday, October 11, at her home. Born February 4, 1914, in Kendall County, Illinois, she was the daughter of Mable Ella Hoge Manchester and Edward Eugene Manchester. She was married to Floyd A. Hummel on May 8, 1938, in Millington, Illinois. He died in November, 1992. She was preceded in death by her older brother, William Manchester, and an infant sister Caroline. Her sister Merle Cowee survives in Portsmouth, Ohio. She was a 1932 graduate of Yorkville High School in Yorkville, Illinois. She obtained a teaching certificate from what is now Northern Illinois University, in DeKalb, Illinois, and taught school in Millington, Illinois for two years. She graduated from The University of Illinois in Urbana in 1938 with a major in mathematics and the Bronze Tablet honor, signifying the top three percent of graduates. She moved with her family to State College in 1946, where she was a homemaker and also worked in the Circulation Department at Penn State's Pattee Library for thirteen years, retiring in 1979. Surviving are two daughters, two sons, and five grandchildren. Son Floyd A. Hummel Jr. and daughter Sara Jeanine Vermillion live in State College. Son Edward Lynn Hummel and daughter Marian Lorraine Rondon live in Madison, Wisconsin. Also in Madison are grandchildren Dylan Ara Hummel, Eva Terese Hummel, Karl Philip Hummel, and Michelle Renee Rondon, Ph. D. Another grandchild is Monica Gabriella Rondon, R.N., in Seattle, Washington. Calling hours are 4-5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 16 at the Mark D. Heintzelman Funeral and Cremation Services PC, 1034 Benner Pike, State College. Burial will be private at the convenience of the family. Marian was a very loving and much beloved mother and grandmother. She was also cheerfully helpful to many friends and neighbors. She will be greatly missed. Memorial contributions may be made to the Floyd A. Hummel Jr. Scholarship in Ceramic Science and Engineering in the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences at Penn State, addressed to 116 Deike Building, University Park, PA, 16802.
