Mark "Captain" J. Koch, 67, of Spring Mills, passed from this life Friday, October 25, 2013, surrounded by and being comforted by his family and friends, at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville.

He was born March 20, 1946, in Altoona, the son of the late Sarah Confer.

On Aug. 9, 1980 he married Vicky L. Hannah who survives at home.

Mark graduated from Williamsburg High School, where he competed in track and field. He set a record and received an award for his success in the one mile run competition.

Early in life he worked in the kitchen at the Corner Room in State College, and later was employed as a house painter for Dennis Charriere Painting. Mark later owned and operated Mark J. Koch Painting and Papering Company until his retirement.

Mark adored his cats and dogs, the out doors where he enjoyed fishing, camping, hiking, and riding his motorcycle. He appreciated his music, especially playing his Native American Flute, which was blessed by a Cherokee Tribal Chief; and had a deep respect for all aspects of the Native American Culture. He and Vicky devoted many volunteer hours to the (ABATE) Toy Runs and Christmas bell ringing projects with the Salvation Army. For many years, Mr. Koch was an active member of the Centre Line Riders Chapter of the Alliance of Bikers Aimed Toward Education (ABATE). He treasured and enjoyed the fellowship of his friends and brothers in this organization. Mark's "free spirit' was released when riding his bike on the open road.

Surviving Mr. Koch in addition to his wife Vicky, are two sons, Michael J. Koch (Tara Tressler) of Spring Mills and Ethan J. Koch at home; and two grandchildren Kyler and Kacen Koch.

Friends will be received from 1:00pm to 3:00pm, Sunday, November 3, 2013 at Mark D. Heintzelman Funeral and Cremation P. C. 226 S. Pennsylvania Ave. Centre Hall, PA. A memorial service will follow at 3:00pm with Captain Charles Niedermyer of the Salvation Army officiating. Burial will be private at the convenience of the family.
