Mary Ellen Ergler, 73, of Pennsylvania Furnace, died Saturday, October 13, 2007 at the DuBois Regional Medical Center in DuBois, PA
She was born June 18, 1934 in Mapleton Depot, PA, a daughter of the late J. Walter Eckley and Leah M. Johnson Eckley Long.
On June 16, 1954, she married Carl Edward Ergler who preceded her in death on January 3, 2002.
She is survived by her three children, Samuel J. Ergler and his wife Sharon Weller Ergler of Port Matilda, Timothy J. Ergler and his wife Heather Thompson Ergler of Honey Brook, PA; and Melissa J. Bates of Berlin, NJ; four grandchildren, Joseph W. Ergler of Port Matilda and Sydney, Natalie and Jessica Ergler all of Honey Brook, PA.
Mary Ellen graduated from Captain Jack High School in Mt. Union, PA in 1952. She went on to graduate from Juniata College in Huntingdon, PA in 1956, with a degree in Elementary Education.
Mrs. Ergler retired from State College Area School District on June 14, 1989, after teaching elementary school at Houserville and Lemont for twenty-two years. She also taught school in Huntingdon and Mifflinburg Schools.
She was a member of Good Shepherd Catholic Church, The National Education Association, the Pennsylvania State Education Association, and a former member of the Centre Squares.
Collecting and refinishing antiques, camping, boating, reading, gardening and spending time with her Bassett Hound provided some of her most enjoyable moments.
Friends will be received from 7 - 9 p. m. on Tuesday, October 16, 2007, at Mark D. Heintzelman Funeral and Cremation Service, 1034 Benner Pike, State College, PA. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a. m. Wednesday, October 17, 2007, at Good Shepherd Catholic Church, 867 Gray's Woods Blvd., State College, with the Reverend Philip Bender as Celebrant. Burial will follow at Centre County Memorial Park, 1032 Benner Pike, State College, PA.
The family suggests that contributions in her memory be made to the Alzheimer's Association of State College, 2790 W. College Ave. State College, PA 16801; or to Houserville Elementary School Library, 217 Scholl St., State College, PA 16801, to purchase books in Mrs. Ergler's memory.
