Mary T. Evans, 89, passed away peacefully one week ago, leaving behind a legacy of dedication to education, service, and family.

Born on June 7, 1937, and raised in New York City, Mary developed a lifelong appreciation for education and learning. After a distinguished career, she retired to State College, Pennsylvania, where she enjoyed the past 20 years of her life.

Mary was preceded in death by her beloved husband, George J. Evans Jr., and her son, Brian Birmingham. She is survived by her son, Kevin Birmingham; her daughters-in-law, Roberta Birmingham and Diane Birmingham; her four grandchildren, David Birmingham, Victoria Birmingham, Emily Birmingham, and Sara Birmingam; her brother and sister-in-law, Francis and Francine Tansey; and her sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Cora and Bruce Janssen. She also leaves behind many extended family members, friends, and colleagues whose lives she touched over the years.

Mary devoted much of her professional life to higher education, including a career at Ocean County College before continuing at Hudson County Community College. Throughout her career, she earned a reputation as a gifted communicator and dedicated professional whose work strengthened the institutions and the communities they served, Her contributions were recognized with numerous honors, including awards from the National Council for Marketing and Public Relations for excellence In communications, as well as recognition from Hudson County Community College for her pivotal role in the college's first major fundraising campaign.

Mary also joined her husband, George J. Evans Jr., in continuing the legacy of Evans Photography Studio, a business that documented the people and history of the Freehold and Monmouth County communities for more than 70 years. The studio's extensive photographic archives were donated to the Monmouth County Historical Association, where they are preserved and available for public viewing.

She was also a founding member of the Battleground Historical Society, helping commemorate the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Monmouth, which was fought in 1778, just outside Freehold, New Jersey. Her dedication to presetving both family and local history reflected a lifelong commitment to ensuring that future generations could appreciate and learn from the past.

Education was one Of Mary's lifelong passions. She earned a Master of Science in Education from The City College of New York, a foundation that reflected her commitment to learning, leadership, and helping others achieve their potential.

Beyond her professional accomplishments, Mary was an avid genealogist who devoted countless hours to researching not only her own family history but also the family trees of relatives and friends. Her love of her Irish heritage led her to visit Ireland more than 20 times, where her mother was born and raised. Over the years, those travels blossomed into lasting friendships, and she developed an extended network of dear friends in both Ireland and Australia,

More than her professional accomplishments, Mary will be remembered for the love she shared with her family, the guidance she offered to those around her, and the lasting impact she made through a life dedicated to education, history, and service. Her kindness, intelligence, and generosity will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

Burial services will be held at Maplewood Cemetery in Freehold, New Jersey, at the convenience of the family.
