Melvin M. Smith's Obituary
Melvin M. Smith, 95, of State College, died Saturday, February 28, 2009, at Centre Crest Nursing Center in Bellefonte.
He was born June 18, 1913 in East Stroudsburg, a son of the late Michael Evert and Anna May Holderman Smith.
He married Margaret (Peg) Ann Reese who preceded him in death June 3, 2006.
Mr. Smith graduated from Pocono Lake High School and from Penn State University.
Throughout his career, He served as a Biology teacher in Brookville and worked at Metzger's Store. He also managed the kitchen and dining rooms at the State College Elks Country Club and the Centre Hills Country Club. Following his retirement, he worked as a cook and house advisor for Phi Kappa Theta Fraternity in State College.
He was a 75-year member of Benevolent and protective Order of the Elks Lodge 1600, State College where we was a past Exalted Ruler; a member of Faith United Church of Christ in State College, as well as an honorary member of Phi Kappa Theta Fraternity.
Mr. Smith is survived by a daughter, Rebecca Ann Connelly of Boalsburg, one son Glenn A. Smith of Onalaska, WI; five grandchildren, Gary Waite of Boalsburg, Margo Zubler of Millheim, Terry and Gregg Smith both of Texas, and LeeAnn Turner of Oklahoma ; and six great grandchildren, Brett and Haley Zubler, Keith, Chance and Cody Smith, and Shawn Greene.
In addition to his parents and wife, Melvin was preceded in death by a son Donald R. Smith and a sister Evelyn Tinston.
A memorial service will be held 3:00 p. m. Saturday, March 21, 2009, at Faith United Church of Christ, 300 E. College Ave., State College, PA with the Reverend Mark Meckstroth Officiating. Friends will be received in the fellowship hall of the church immediately following the memorial services. Burial will be private at the convenience of the family at Boalsburg Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contribution in his memory may be made to Faith United Church of Christ, 300 E. College Ave., State College, Pa 16801 or the employee's fund at Centre Crest Nursing Center, 502 E. Howard St., Bellefonte, PA 16823.
