Mildred Madelyn Learn, 91, of State College, died Saturday, August 2, 2008, at Mt. Nittany Medical Center at State College.
She was born January 13, 1917, in Seymour, WI, a daughter of the late Dewey D. and Margaret C. Hahn Sears.
On July 25, 1945, she married Alan Norman Learn who preceded her in death January 22, 1974.
She is survived by her daughter in law, a grandson, Jordan Learn of Camp Hill, and her twin sister Marie Sears of State College.
In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Learn was preceded in death by a son David Alan Learn, a sister Margaret Rose and two brothers, Clayton J. and Robert R. Sears.
Mildred graduated from East Green Bay High School in Green Bay, WI and attend Appleton Conservatory in Appleton WI.
She was employed by Clearfield Cheese Company in Curwensville, as an office clerk retiring in 1979. Following that retirement, from 1979 until her retirement in June of 1988, she worked in the Office of the Aging in Bellefonte.
A resident of the Curwensville area for many years, she was a past president of the Curwensville Womans club, a past president of the Parent Teacher Association of the Curwensville area schools, and a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Curwensville, where she was active in the choir, served on the Church Council and taught Sunday School. She was also a Lifetime Honorary member of the Pennsylvania Federation of Womans Clubs, and the PACT (People and Animals Coming Together); and after moving to State college, she was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in State College, where she was active in the choir.
Mrs. Learn gave back to her communities with great enthusiasm, serving as a volunteer and a member of the advisory board of the RSVP (Retired Senior Volunteer Program), a volunteer counselor at the former Centre Community Hospital, and with the Office of the Aging, often working the information desks for both organizations, and volunteered with the Nittany Valley of Centre County Chapter of the AARP.
A memorial services will be held at Grace Lutheran Church, 205 S. Garner St., State College at 2:00 p. m. on Sunday, September 14, 2008, at with the Reverend P. Stevens Lynn officiating. Burial will be private at the convenience of the family.
