Obituary

Owen L. Herniman, Jr., (age 84), died suddenly in Milesburg on April 8, 2026. He was born on April 16, 1941 in New Kensington to Owen L. Herniman Sr. and Bessie I. (Lochrane) Herniman. The family relocated from Springdale to Milesburg in 1951 for employment, when the West Penn put in a substation in Milesburg. Owen was proud to be a first generation American of Scottish parents.

He attended Bellefonte High School and graduated from Bald Eagle High School in the class of 1959. Owen wrestled and played baseball, and he also participated in band. He had a lot of musical talent and was an excellent dancer. He was also in a local band for many years, called the Innmen. After high school, he attended the Pittsburgh Barber School, and worked for many years as owner and operator of Owen’s Barber Shop on North Atherton Street in State College. He was a well-known and successful businessman in the local area. Owen was an avid Penn State wrestling and football fan, known for his quick wit, hard work, and loyalty to family. He and Sandy enjoyed golfing for many years.

Owen married the love of his life, Sandra C. Cox, on May 25, 1968 in Eisenhower Chapel on the campus of Penn State University. They lived in Lemont. She preceded him in death on March 20, 2026. He was also preceded in death by his parents, infant brother James P. Herniman, and great nephew Mitchell S. Taylor.

Surviving are two sisters, Karen A. Ryen and her husband Allen of Rochester Mills, and Nancy A. Taylor and her husband Richard of Milesburg. Owen has five nieces and nephews – Douglas M. Taylor (Dawn) of Bellefonte, Keith O. Taylor (Meghan) of Bellefonte, and Richard C. Taylor (Cindy) of Yarnell, Adam P. Ryen of Rochester Mills, and Amanda K. Ryen-Yowhan (Michael) of Ithaca, NY. He is also survived by many great nephews and nieces, Nicholas Taylor, Jacob Taylor (Douglas), Morgan Taylor Richards, Zachary Taylor, and Nathan Taylor (Keith), Richard Taylor IV, Caitlin Taylor, Kevin Taylor, Olivia Taylor, Steven Taylor, Anna Taylor, and Derek Taylor (Richard), Connor Ryen, and Owen Ryen (Adam). Owen is also survived by William Cox Jr. of Florida, and Pauline R. Krebs (Thomas) of Bellefonte, and children, Ashley (Gabriel) Koprivnikar and son Jayson Krebs.

Owen was of the Catholic faith. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. John’s Catholic Church in Bellefonte, 134 East Bishop Street, Bellefonte, PA 16823.

A funeral service will be held Saturday, April 18, 2026, 2:00pm, at Haky Georgiana Centre County Funeral Home, 1034 Benner Pike, State College, with a visitation from 1-2pm. Burial will be at Centre County Memorial Park.
