Obituary

Pamela K. Smith, 69, of State College died April 11, 2016.

Born in Altoona, PA on February 20th 1947, to Robert Smith and Wanda Parks Smith of Williamsburg, PA.

She graduated from Williamsburg High School, Received a BA and a MS Degree in Archeology and an MS in Special Education from the Pennsylvania State University. She served in the U.S. Air Force during the Viet Nam War. She was responsible for running the terminal at Hickam Air Force Base in Hawaii. After discharged with a disability, she was instrumental in launching the Penn State's American Indian Special Education Doctoral and Master Degree programs funded by the United States Department of Education. The program from 1985 to 2002 graduated approximately 45 doctoral and master degree students who have become leaders in their communities helping special needs populations. She also tutored and assisted in developing research programs with a number of American Indian students.

She was predeceased by her parents, and a number of aunts and uncles.

She is survived by her uncle, Seibert Parks; cousins, Rhonda, Terry and Diana; and close friends, Anna and Beverly.

She will be remembered for her intelligence, patriotism, loyalty, goodwill, love of animals, sensitivity for the issues facing indigenous peoples and a great sense of humor.

A graveside memorial service will be held 2 p.m., Saturday, May 21st at Centre County Memorial Park, State College, with full military honors in accord.
