R. Eugene Wolfe, 87, of Spring Mills, died peacefully in his sleep on Saturday, July 31, 2010 at Mount Nittany Medical Center in State College.
Born on March 29, 1923 in Swartara Township, Lebanon County, he was a son of the late Lloyd A. and Rosie E. (Light) Wolfe.
On February 14, 1943, he married Martha Ellen Mumma of Mount Joy who preceded him in death on April 27, 1978.
In his earlier years, he was active in the Brethren in Christ Church.
Mr. Wolfe, known to many as Pappy, began farming in Spring Mills in 1944. In 1945, he started his trucking business hauling produce from Florida to Spring Mills. He owned and operated R. E. Wolfe Lime Service for 55 years, hauling and spreading agricultural limestone in Pennsylvania, New York and Ohio. His generosity and kindness is still remembered and appreciated by many farmers. He retired in 2001.
Mr. Wolfe is survived by one son, Larry M. Wolfe (Vickie) of Bellefonte, two daughters, Janet W. Madore (Jack) of State College and Donna J. Miller (Wesley) of Spring Mills; a brother John C. Wolfe of Manheim, a sister Dorothy Melhorn of Lewisberry; three grandchildren, Julie, Andrew (Molly), and Maureen Miller; two great-grandchildren, Madelyn and Regan Miller. In addition to his parents and his wife, he was preceded in death by a son Ray Eugene Wolfe Jr., and a sister Frances Oberholtzer.
Friends and family will be received from 9 - 11 a.m. Friday, August 6, 2010, at New Hope Lutheran Church, 119 Cobblestone Court, Spring Mills, PA. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a. m. with Pastor Mark Melhorn of Brisbin officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to WTLR Radio Station, 2020 Cato Avenue, State College, PA 16801 or to an organization of your choice.
