Reed A. Garman, 86, of Centre Hall, died Thursday, April 23, 2009, at Centre Crest Nursing Center in Bellefonte.
He was born July 28, 1922 in Benner Township, Centre County, a son of the late William H. and Carrie Esther Albright Garman.
On April 6, 1947, he married Ruth Hackett who survives at home.
Mr. Garman served with the U. S. Army during World War II in the European and African Middle Eastern Theaters, earning a purple heart. He also played the trombone in the Army Band.
Following his discharge, he went to work in the body repair shop at Warner-Lewis Buick in Lewistown, and later worked at Cerro Metals near Bellefonte, retiring as a trimming department supervisor.
Reed was a member of St. Luke Lutheran Church and was a formerly active member of the Centre Hall Lions Club.
Gifted and mechanically inclined, he enjoyed machine work, working on cars and other mechanical work. He had some interest in hunting and fishing especially when it was with his sons, and thoroughly enjoyed baseball and football.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, George R. Garman and his wife Barbara of rural Spring Mills, and Thomas K. Garman of Frederick, MD; four grandchildren, Amanda and Adam and Kim and Keri Garman. He is also survived by his ex daughter in law Patricia.
A memorial service will be held at 7:00 p. m. Tuesday, April 28, 2009, at St. Luke Lutheran Church, 301 N. Pennsylvania Ave. Centre Hall, PA with the Reverend Doctor Barry Folmar officiating. Friends will be received in the fellowship hall of the church immediately following the service. Burial will be private at the convenience of the family.
