Obituary

Richard E. Thomas, 74, of rural Middleburg, went home to be with His Lord, on Thursday, Sept. 13, 2007, at Sunbury Community Hospital, Sunbury, PA.
He was born January 6, 1933 near Winfield, a son of the late Arthur and Mabel Thomas Smith, and was the last of his generation.
On May 8, 1952, he married Kathryn E. Kashner who survives at home.
In addition to his wife, Richard is survived by five daughters, Elaine A. Fox (Timothy) of Mt. Carmel. Barbara A. Thomas of Paxinos, Annette L. Woodruff (Kent) of Ashland, Beth G. Freed (Ronald) of Beavertown, and Gwendolyn J. Straub (Rodney) of Middleburg; three sons Leelann R. Thomas (Janice) of Kulpmont, Jeffrey L. Thomas of Sunbury, and Robert E. Thomas (Denise) of rural Middleburg; 25 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, and a son in law Donald "Butch" Newman.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Thomas was preceded in death by two daughters, Donna L. Newman, and Kathryn Thomas and a son Marshall Thomas; six sisters, Bessie, Nora, Vernetta, Mary, Edna and Martha; and six brothers, Harrison, Raymond, Paul, Walter, Irvin, Clarence, and Arthur.
For many years Richard was an over the road truck driver, owning and operating his own truck as well as driving for others. He also worked for Ceco Steel, the Danville State Hospital, and co-owned and operated a service station in Riverside. For many years he drove school buses and in addition to his other work, he was a McNess dealer for many years.
Mr. Thomas was a member of the Church of Christ in Christian Union at Mt. Pleasant Mills. In the year 2000, he was awarded the Father of The Year Award by the church. He cherished spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed camping and gardening.
A visitation for Mr. Thomas will be held on Tuesday, September 18, 2007, from 7 - 9 p. m. at the Sunbury God's Missionary Church, 820 Susquehanna Ave., Sunbury, PA. The funeral will be at 10:30 a. m. Wednesday, September 19, 2007 at the church with the Rev. Daryl Kuhns and the Rev. Jack Bowman officiating. Burial will be at Northumberland Memorial Park, Route 61, Sunbury, PA.
