Robert B. Carlson of Centre Hall, PA, formerly of Jamestown, NY, died on April 26, 2010 at the age of 92.
Barney, as he was known to all, was born June 3, 1917, in Jamestown, NY to Simon and Hildur Anderson Carlson. A 1936 graduate of Jamestown High School, he went on to earn his bachelor's degree from Michigan State University School of Business. While at Michigan, he played the clarinet in the university's marching band. During WWII, he served for 4 ½ years in the South Pacific as a member of the Army Air Corps.
In 1946, Barney married the former Jean Jacobson O'Brien, who survives him. They raised their five daughters in Western NY, most recently in Lakewood. Upon his retirement as Vice President of the First National Bank of Jamestown, Barney and Jean moved to Hendersonville, NC. They enjoyed 17 years there before relocating to Centre Hall, PA.
Barney was well known for being sociable and having a great wit. He was an avid golfer and belonged to the Chautauqua Golf Club for many years. He was an active member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church and also served on the board of the Jamestown YMCA. During his many years as a Rotarian, Barney was very involved in the foreign exchange student program. He enjoyed traveling and reading, bird watching and spending time with his daughters and their families.
In addition to his wife, Barney is survived by his five daughters, Judith Wilson and Polly Halfkenny, both of Brooklyn, NY, Susan (Richard) Minekime of Eden, NY, Kathleen (Brian) Grimes of East Greenwich, RI, Mary Ellen (Michael) Bogdan of State College, PA; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Adeline Hitchcock of California and Eleanor Larson of Florida. He was predeceased by his brother Donald L. Carlson of Madison, IN.
Barney will be lovingly remembered and missed by all who knew him.
Memorial gifts may be made to the Lakewood Memorial Library, Salvation Army of Jamestown, and Roger Tory Peterson Institute of Natural History.
Interment will take place in St. Luke's Columbarium in Jamestown, NY, at a later date.
