William and Theodora Sherwood. He is survived by his wife, Judy Good Sherwood (State College, PA.) whom he married in 2006, and his three children Donna McBride (John) of Hilliard, Oh, Kathy "Kitty'' August (Randy) of Las Vegas, NV., and Thom Sherwood (John Fikkan) of Tucson, AZ, grandchildren Mike McBride (Rachel) with his beloved great grandchildren Chase, Corey, and Conor "C-Bob" of McMurray, PA., James McBride (Ryan Flenniken) of Brea, CA, Kelly August (Erik Bonilla) of Reno, NV, Allison Hobby(David) of Wellington, CO, Patrick August of Eagleville, PA. Also surviving are his step-children Scott Good (Christine) of State College, Todd Good (Karen) of Ellicott City, MD, step-grandchildren Bryan Good (Alex) of Knoxville, TN, Chris Good (Alyssa) of Lancaster, PA, Jordan Good of State College, Taylor Good, and Nick Good of Ellicott City, MD. Bob has a number of nieces and nephews originally from the Rochester, NY and Milwaukee, WI areas including David Sherwood(Paula), John Sherwood (Karolyn), Rosie Sherwood, Sue Grode, Heidi Eigenfeld (Jerry), Doug Nefe, Jim Nefe, and all of their children and grandchildren.
Bob was preceded in death by his first wife, Ellen (Leete) Sherwood, parents William T. and Theodora (Steigerwald) Sherwood, sister Marguerite Sherwood, brother William T. Sherwood and his wife, Rhoda, and nephew, Terry Sherwood.
In the early 1930's, Bob's father accepted a call to lead the Episcopal Church in Tyrone, PA, where Robert had many fond memories as a young boy through Elementary school. His family then moved to Brownsville, Texas. He did well enough that he was able to skip a grade and finished undergraduate schooling early. He decided to take a break and traveled out west with some of his close friends and tried a few jobs (oil fields and dock worker unloading banana boats) before deciding on attending Trinity College of San Antonio, TX. He completed his Bachelors and Masters degrees in plant sciences at Cornell University before moving out to Madison to earn his Doctorate of Science at the University of Wisconsin. While there, he met his first wife, Ellen. They married and had their first child, Donna before relocating to Raleigh, N.C. to work as a USDA research scientist in plant pathology at N.C. State as well as a full professor from 1958-1971. He was given the opportunity to work in Happy Valley with USDA located at the Penn State University in 1971-working until his retirement in 1998. He was an editor for the Phytopathology Journal for many years and published many papers on plant diseases from Buffelgrass to Apomixis. He taught and worked with many graduate students at both universities and established friendships internationally with many of their families.
When not working, Bob enjoyed traveling with his family and usually spent two to three weeks of each summer alternating between the East (Adirondacks, Hanging Rock State Park, or the Blue Ridge Mountains) and the West (Tetons, Yellowstone, Pikes Peak, Yosemite, or the Rocky Mtns). These trips included many backpacking, hiking, or climbing adventures along with stops at historical locations. His favorite training area for these trips was Mt. Nittany which for over 35 years was nearly a daily walk or two in the evenings. (Probably not too many others have surpassed his number of climbs up and down Mt. Nittany.)
Bob developed a love for flying after taking a floatplane ride in the Adirondacks. He worked hard to get his VFR and later, IFR pilot certifications, becoming a private pilot who logged many hours flying around the country with his family and friends. He was never happier than when he was above the clouds, sharing his love of the wild blue yonder with others. He traveled to many local and national airshows including Oshkosh, Florida's "Fun in the Sun", and at Wright Patterson Airforce Base and Museum. He belonged to the local airplane clubs: PsyFlyers and Centre Flyers, and proudly served as a volunteer for many years in the Centre region Civil Air Patrol rising through the ranks to First Lieutenant. He also belonged to the Experimental Aircraft Association.
In his later years he took cruises and trips to Hawaii, Alaska, the Caribbean, Greece, Italy, Turkey, and Israel (taking tours where Christ and Paul traveled and spread the Word). He and his wife, Judy, worshipped at the State College Access Church. They shared their faith at local nursing homes and assisted living facilities with the "Solid Rock Singers".
We'd like to express our appreciation to the many who have helped support Bob in his final journey: especially to neighbors, church friends, relatives, Home Instead, Houck Home Care and (a BIG thank you to) Grane Hospice.
A Memorial Service or "Celebration of Life" will be planned at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude's, ASPCA, or to your favorite charity.
