Russell "Rolly" A. Allen, 90, of Salem Hill Haven, Spring Mills, formerly of Centre Hall, died Wednesday, August 20, 2008 at Salem Hill Haven.
He was born May 9, 1918, in Potter Township, a son of the late Albert S. and Lydia Smith Allen.
On June 20, 1946, he married Annabelle L. Shay, who preceded him in death on October 15, 1996.
During World War II, Mr. Allen served with the 121st Quartermaster Car Company from March 27, 1941 until June 13, 1945, earning the rank of Cpl. Tech. Mr. Allen served in London England, Oran Africa, Southern France and DiJon France and Manheim Germany.
Early in life he worked at Neidigh Brothers Quarry at Lemont and later at Cherry Run Coal Company in Snow Shoe. Later, he owned and operated Allen's Excavating for nine years. Finally he worked for the Ironworkers of America local 722, retiring in 1977.
He was a member of Sprucetown United Methodist Church, rural Spring Mills; the V.F.W. Post 1600, Bellefonte, and the Nittany Antique Machinery Association.
Rolly especially enjoyed working with antique engines, and doing other mechanical work.
He is survived by one daughter, Ellen L. Holden of Richmond, VA; three sons, Thomas L. Allen of Aaronsburg, Sidney D. Allen of Millheim, and Terry L. Allen of rural Spring Mills; 10 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren; one step great grandchild; and one sister Betty A. Shawley of State College.
In addition to his wife and parents he was preceded in death by a daughter, Susan J. Decker on October 6, 1999; one grandson, four sisters and one brother.
Friends will be received from 3 - 5 p. m. Sunday, August 24, 2008, at Sprucetown United Methodist Church, Upper George's Valley Road, near Potters Mills. The memorial service will follow immediately at 5:00 p. m. with the Reverend L. Ed Moore officiating. Burial will be private at the convenience of the family at the Lutheran and Reformed Cemetery, W. Church St. Centre Hall, PA
